Job Summary & Requirements
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As an integral member of the Laboratory team the Medical Laboratory Technologist responsibilities include:
- participating in technical, professional and quality in-services and education
- participating in staff and patient experience and feedback initiatives, professional development, teaching/ educational activities, safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services;
- reading and confirming reading and understanding laboratory policies and procedures through document control software
- forwarding suggestions for policy and procedure improvement or corrections required to the Charge or Team Leader.
- performing laboratory procedures for specific discipline(s) and functions and ensuring the completion of assigned workload;
- operating, troubleshooting and maintaining cleanliness of laboratory equipment and work area; preparing written and electronic reports required to document procedures and test results; participating in teaching, educational, safety and quality improvement programs;
- observing and understanding hospital policies and procedures;
- adhering to hospital and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality;
- performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested;
- performing other related duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned, requested, or required.
SUPERVISION/ DIRECTION GIVEN:
- Provides technical supervision for Medical Laboratory Assistants in the applicable area, ensuring work is completed, in accordance with established policies and ACCREDITATION CANADA - DIAGNOSTICS requirements. Provides technical supervision and guidance for Medical Laboratory Assistants and Phlebotomists when required.
- Recommends and communicates changes to enhance the efficient and cost-effective operation of the laboratory.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY:
- Support Internal Responsibility System by administering RVH Health & Safety policies and procedures, the Ontario Health & Safety Act and regulations and WHMIS.
- Participate in Health & Safety training as required.
- Provide a safe working environment and ensure all equipment is evaluated, validated and well maintained.
- Participate in Workplace Inspections and hazard identifications, accident/incident investigations; including analysis, risk assessment, and the implementation of corrective measures.
- Supports Laboratory Safety Representative to evaluate status and maintain full ACCREDITATION CANADA - DIAGNOSTICS safety compliance
- Suggest Health & Safety items to be discussed at staff meetings.
- Complete Health & Safety education and training as required that includes job-specific training and safe work practices. The above responsibilities are not to be considered all-inclusive; may be assigned other related duties in the interest of efficient operations of RVH or effective patient care.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario Laboratory Accreditation program preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies within the field.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and professionally with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks at a time in a cost-effective manner.
- Demonstrated ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgment.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellent attendance and schedule flexibility.

- Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office, internet use and another computer software.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and performing mandatory reviews.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- General certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post-secondary institute.
- Certification through the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
- Registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist of Ontario (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.
Experience
- Minimum one (1) year recent laboratory experience in related discipline(s), as required by assigned area, preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop skill and knowledge in required areas of the laboratory required.
- Experience with current instrumentation/automation in respective area an asset.
- General knowledge of all areas of the laboratory preferred.
- General knowledge of the theory and practices of applicable laboratories procedures and equipment required.
- Meditech and LIS knowledge and experience an asset
PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATION:
- Current registration with the College of Medical laboratory Technologist (CMLTO) in areas of responsibility required.
