Job summary

Under supervision, the technician obtains blood and urine specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and staff, prepares samples, coordinates referrals to licensed laboratories, and distributes test results. The role also supports Point of Care Testing and helps maintain equipment, inventory, and a safe lab environment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved Laboratory Assistants/Technician training program.
• Experience in phlebotomy.
• Experience in working with elderly clients and individuals with a variety of disabilities an asset.

The Medical Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and efficient collection of client specimens from the point of initial contact with the client to data entry, phlebotomy, and to the final preparation of specimens for transportation. These procedures do not require interpretation assessment or the exercise of independent judgment. The procedures are performed under the direct supervision of the Medical Laboratory Technologist.
