Job description

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - Evening Shift, 3 PM to 11:30 PM

Medical Laboratory Scientists perform and evaluate complex laboratory tests across various areas of the clinical laboratory. This role requires a thorough understanding of precision instruments and a variety of automated and electronic equipment. MLSs work with minimal supervision and must be skilled in identifying issues, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Operate and maintain complex laboratory instruments; may serve as key operators, supporting supervisors with training, advanced maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  2. Assist in developing and refining procedures to ensure test accuracy.
  3. Perform and document all required Quality Control procedures, appropriately managing outliers.
  4. Report all critical values promptly to the appropriate personnel and ensure proper documentation.
  5. Alert supervisors to unusual results or any existing/potential issues, using the appropriate documentation processes.
  6. Adhere to all hospital and laboratory safety protocols, including Universal Precautions, QA documentation, Fire Safety, and Hazardous Waste handling.
  7. Maintain complete, accurate, and legible records.
  8. Participate in the orientation of new staff, students, residents, or fellows as needed.
  9. Take initiative to support smooth lab operations.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Patient Safety:
    • Follow hospital and department safety procedures to ensure a safe environment.
    • Practice proper hand hygiene and use two patient identifiers.
    • Ensure effective communication during handoffs and transitions.
    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety precautions.
  2. Testing:
    • Accurately perform and promptly report laboratory tests per SOPs.
    • Prioritize stat orders and assist colleagues during busy periods.
    • Report critical values per lab policy.
  3. Quality Control:
    • Regularly perform QC procedures, equipment checks, and maintenance.
    • Review and document results in accordance with SOPs.
  4. Training & Education:
    • Stay current with continuing education and competency requirements.
    • Participate in QA initiatives, proficiency testing, and policy reviews.
  5. Professional Expectations:
    • Proactively assist with departmental tasks and support team efficiency.
    • Take initiative and seek additional responsibilities when time permits.
Requirements:
  • Baccalaureate Degree in a Science required
  • Must be ASCP Eligible or Certified, required
  • Internship or equivalent required
  • 3-5 years in a hospital laboratory experience preferred.
