Under management supervision, the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) supports Pathology and Laboratory Medicine by performing functions related to pre and post-analytical testing phases, including specimen procurement, processing, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens on analyzers. Responsibilities may also include supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service.
Accurate patient identification and specimen handling are crucial. Duties vary based on operational needs and may require working rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and off-site locations such as long-term care facilities or private homes. Interaction with stakeholders and clients is expected, with strict adherence to safety, infection control policies, and professional appearance. MLAs must work independently, exercise good judgment, and provide excellent customer service.
