The Medical Laboratory Assistant 1 (MLA1) at Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH) is responsible for collecting, processing, sorting, and distributing laboratory samples, ensuring accurate handling and timely delivery of results to support patient diagnosis and care. Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, Specimen Control, the MLA1 works as part of a team in a high-volume laboratory that handles over 410,000 tests annually. Key duties include patient identification, sample labeling, processing specimens for testing, and maintaining accurate records. The MLA1 also prepares samples for transport and ensures proper storage. Attention to detail and adherence to laboratory procedures are critical for ensuring the accuracy and quality of test results. The position supports laboratory services for STH and multiple health centers, clinics, and hospitals across the Northwest Territories. The MLA1 plays an essential role in the smooth operation of the laboratory, helping ensure the healthcare team has the necessary test results to diagnose, treat, and manage patient care.
This level of knowledge is typically acquired through the successful completion of an Accreditation Canada recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program at a minimum of a certificate level.
Or completion of an Accreditation Canada recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program.
Incumbent must be certified at the time of employment and maintain active registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science as a Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant throughout the term of employment.
