Job description

The Medical Laboratory Technologist 1- Hematology/Histology/Chemistry/BTS/PFT assists with the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing a variety of standard examinations and procedures in hematology. This role is responsible for organizing time and resources for the effective conduct of laboratory examinations and procedures, participating in the Department's rotation of duties including evenings, weekends, and holiday schedules, and performing other related and allied duties.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Determining required procedures by reading requisitions and seeking clarification if necessary from physicians and paramedical staff;
  • Providing information to patients, physicians, and paramedical staff regarding the regimes associated with various tests and specimen collections;
  • Obtaining venous and capillary blood samples required for blood tests and analyses using prescribed aseptic and venipuncture techniques;
  • Preparing specimens for test procedures by centrifuging, separating, measuring, and pipetting precise quantities required for analytical procedures;
  • Analyzing specimens to determine the existence and/or proportion of constituent biological/chemical components and other specimen characteristics according to standard manual and automated procedures;
  • Preparing and using standard and control solutions to calibrate equipment and ensuring proper operation in accordance with test and quality control procedures;
  • Assisting physician at bone marrow aspirations by immediate processing of specimen;
  • Using computerized data management and reporting systems in an efficient and effective manner;
  • Forwarding test and analysis results to the requesting physician or to the patient's location;
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Medical Technologist Certificate from an approved school of Medical Technology.
  • Must have current registration with C.S.M.L.S at the Registered Technologist level.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensing with the College of Allied Health Professionals of PEI.
  • Must have successful completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program from an accredited institution.
  • The ability to work independently and with others is essential.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • A good previous work attendance record.

Other Qualifications:

  • Recent training and/or experience in hematology, histology, chemistry, BTS, or PFT is preferred.
  • Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.

Salary Range: $31.90 – $39.16 per hour (level G11)

Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours Bi-Weekly / Rotating Days, Evenings, Nights, and Weekends
