Position Overview The medical editor listens to recorded dictation from health care providers using computer software, a headset and foot pedal to type, edit/correct and format automated medical speech recognition transcripts and efficiently produce accurate medical reports. The medical editor will ensure accurate distribution of medical reports and timely completion of editing within established provincial turnaround times and productivity standards. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Responsibilities
  • Listen to recorded dictation from health care providers and edit/correct and format transcripts using computer software, headset and foot pedal.
  • Ensure accurate distribution of medical reports and timely completion of editing within provincial turnaround times and productivity standards.
  • Produce accurate medical reports in a consistent manner aligned with organizational policies.
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience transcribing or editing in a medical/healthcare environment, including applying medical terminology (anatomy, physiology, disease processes, acronyms, pharmaceuticals, laboratory values, surgical procedures and instruments).
  • 2 years experience with voice recognition software and use of a headset and foot pedal.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized medical transcriptionist training program.
  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Typing/keyboarding skills of 60 words per minute with typing test if required.
  • Proficiency using office software and equipment (including Microsoft Office) and Electronic Patient Records.
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written), including superior spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Keen attention to detail and excellent interpersonal and communication skills (including videoconferencing technologies such as Microsoft Teams and email).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Understand dictation by individuals for whom English is an additional language and manage rapid speech or strong accents.
  • Work with confidential personal health information in compliance with privacy legislation.
  • Respect for culturally diverse populations; bilingual proficiency may be essential for designated positions. Valid Class 5 driver’s license and vehicle with liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Periods of prolonged use of computer monitor, keyboard and headset.
  • May be required to travel independently to other regional facilities.
