Job Summary

This position performs routine clerical, administrative, and clinical duties within the scope allowed for TN state law. The MA may be assigned to a specific clinic/provider or float to various clinics/providers based on business needs. The role requires collaboration with physicians, providers, team members, patients, and the public. The MA must be customer-focused, committed to growth, and aligned with HMA’s mission, vision, values, and compliance standards.

Responsibilities
Clinical
  • Gather and document clinical data during patient encounters, including chief complaints, vital signs, allergies, medications, and health history.
  • Notify physicians or nurses of patient status, abnormal data, or concerns; administer CPR if needed.
  • Triages patients appropriately and informs providers of issues in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and administer medications, immunizations, and treatments as ordered, following protocols and understanding dosages and reactions.
  • Conduct CLIA-waived tests and handle specimens according to protocols.
  • Operate and troubleshoot clinical equipment.
  • Assist with procedures and patient education, ensuring exam rooms are stocked and clean.
  • Manage prescriptions and medication samples accurately and securely.
Administrative
  • Ensure timely processing of instrument sterilization and supply management.
  • Schedule patient appointments, verify insurance, and obtain pre-authorizations.
  • Follow up on referrals, tests, and results, ensuring proper documentation and communication.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and adhere to quality control standards.
Clerical
  • Answer and return calls professionally.
  • Order supplies and complete required forms accurately.
  • Participate in meetings and training to stay current with operational changes.
Customer Service
  • Treat patients and staff with sensitivity, courtesy, and respect.
  • Ensure patient questions are answered and needs are addressed, embodying HMA’s mission and values.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge; experience with EHR systems preferred.
Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • For float positions, valid TN driver’s license and insurance are required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to stand for 8-10 hours, lift at least 25 lbs, and assist patients physically.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and clinical hazards.
