MEDICAL ANALYST RESEARCHER

CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

The Safe Medical Care Research (SMC-R) department performs acquisition, abstraction, and capture of clinically oriented medical legal data. The department analyzes and interprets the data to generate knowledge that supports the activities of Safe Medical Care. The department also responds to internal and external requests for data analysis. The department studies historical data to identify individual provider, team and system factors associated with medico-legal risk, researches trends, and evaluates the performance and impact of education programs. The department synthesizes evidence and disseminates its research findings by authoring reports, risk management and educational materials in collaboration with CMPA’s physician advisors, physician members, general counsel, and the Communications department.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The medical analyst researcher (MAR) undertakes knowledge translation activities in support of the CMPA’s strategic directions. With an understanding of the purposes of the Safe Medical Care groups, and of SMC-R methodologies, the MAR performs analysis using CMPA data to identify medico-legal risks and develop risk reduction messages. As an integral member of a multidisciplinary research team, the incumbent provides the link between the analytical team and internal and external clients. The medical analyst researcher works collaboratively with team members to ensure quality of the research products.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

  1. Collaborates with the physician collaborator and project team members to determine research questions, project scope and timelines. Meets with collaborators at various stages of the project to discuss progress, interim findings and project direction. Creates and maintains the project charter throughout the life of the project and follows project management processes.
  2. Conducts analysis using appropriate analytical frameworks. Develops risk reduction messages based on key research findings.
  3. If required, identifies and presents medico-legal case examples which represent the main clinical issues noted in the analysis.
  4. Translates analytical findings in a written format using common language aligning with corporate and departmental standards and best practices. Works closely with project team members to ensure the accuracy of the information, and the clarity and appropriateness of the messaging.
  5. Participates in quality assurance activities to support quality improvement of research products.
  6. Performs other analytical tasks when required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. 4-year Bachelor in Nursing Science (or equivalent combination of Diploma and additional work experience)
  2. Registered Nurse designation and registration with the College of Nurses
  3. A minimum of 10 years relevant clinical nursing experience
  4. Ability to work under minimal supervision
  5. Excellent judgement and synthesizing skills
  6. Excellent time management skills

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  2. Ability to write clearly and succinctly
  3. Ability to summarize complex data or information
  4. Familiarity with National and International Coding standards in the medical field (ICD/CCI)
  5. Understanding of research methodologies

POSTING DETAILS

  1. Job Type: Regular Full-Time
  2. Salary Range: $83,700 to $111,900 – this role is classified as level 8
  3. Skills Assessment: Selected candidates will be required to complete a skills assessment
  4. Location: Hybrid – Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake. This position cannot be performed fully remotely.
