Job summary

Hatch Ltd. in Calgary is seeking an experienced Mechanical Package Engineer to lead technical development, procurement, and delivery of mechanical equipment packages for mining, metals, energy, and industrial projects. You will work within a multidisciplinary project team, manage vendor relationships, review vendor drawings, and ensure packages meet project schedules and safety requirements.

The ideal candidate holds a B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering with a P.Eng.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • P.Eng. registration or eligibility.
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering experience within EPCM, consulting, mining, metals, oil & gas, energy, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience managing mechanical equipment packages through engineering, procurement, and construction phases.
  • Experience with Pumps, Compressors, Tanks, Crushers, Mills.
  • Knowledge of ASME, API, CSA, and relevant industry standards.
  • Experience reviewing vendor documentation and performing technical bid evaluations.
  • Strong understanding of procurement and commissioning processes.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate mechanical package interfaces with process, piping, structural, electrical, controls, and construction teams.
  • Provide technical support during equipment installation and commissioning.
  • Support turnover and handover documentation.

Hatch is seeking experienced Mechanical Package Engineers in our Calgary office. The Mechanical Package Engineer is responsible for the technical development, procurement, vendor management, and delivery of assigned mechanical equipment packages for mining, metals, energy, and industrial projects. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary project team and serve as the primary technical focal point for designated equipment packages throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and design through procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.

The role requires a strong understanding of mechanical equipment, procurement processes, vendor management, and equipment integration within large EPCM projects.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Package Management

  • Act as the responsible engineer for assigned mechanical equipment packages.
  • Prepare and develop equipment specifications, datasheets, requisitions, and scope of supply documents.
  • Develop technical bid evaluation criteria and participate in vendor selection.
  • Review vendor proposals and provide technical recommendations for equipment award.
  • Lead technical clarifications with vendors throughout procurement activities.
  • Review and approve vendor drawings, calculations, and manufacturing documents.
  • Monitor vendor progress and ensure compliance with project specifications and schedules.
  • Develop mechanical equipment design criteria and package requirements.
  • Perform equipment sizing calculations and equipment selection.
  • Review PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and 3D models for package integration.
  • Coordinate mechanical package interfaces with process, piping, structural, electrical, controls, and construction teams.
  • Support hazard reviews, constructability reviews, and design reviews.
  • Support procurement activities through the preparation of material requisitions and technical bid evaluations.
  • Participate in vendor meetings and kick-off meetings.
  • Evaluate vendor deviations and concession requests.
  • Coordinate equipment inspections, FATs, and shop testing activities.
  • Track procurement schedules and provide input to project execution planning.
  • Provide technical support during equipment installation and commissioning.
  • Review field changes and vendor site instructions.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and start-up activities.
  • Support turnover and handover documentation.
  • Participate in commissioning and operational readiness reviews.

Project Coordination

  • Monitor package budgets and schedules.
  • Identify technical risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Prepare progress reports and package status updates.
  • Ensure package deliverables are completed in accordance with project quality systems and safety requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration or eligibility.
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical engineering experience within EPCM, consulting, mining, metals, oil & gas, energy, or heavy industrial environments.
  • Experience managing mechanical equipment packages through engineering, procurement, and construction phases.

  • Previous EPCM consulting experience.
  • Familiarity with Hatch, Ausenco, Fluor, Worley, Wood, or similar engineering execution models.
  • Experience with:

  • Navisworks
  • SmartPlant
  • Bentley or equivalent engineering systems.
  • Site construction or commissioning experience.
