Our office in Port Robinson, Ontario is seeking a Mechanical Layout Drafter / Metrology Technician to join the team.

Summary of the Role

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, Corporate, the Mechanical Layout Drafter / Metrology Technician will be responsible for preparing complex mechanical layout drawings specific to project documents and requirements using CAD software. This includes developing drawings from notes, sketches, engineering schematics and guides, vendor information, and other sources to meet project and product specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend site meetings to assist in coordination and planning.
  • Supervise and perform / obtain field measurements and verification of customer-supplied information.
  • Supervise and coordinate CAD vendors when required.
  • Produce 2-D and 3-D CAD drawings with limited information (sketches, notes, schematics, guides or other documentation) from the client in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Extract drawings and information from models and information supplied by the client.
  • Maintain all technical and mechanical layout drawings using 2-D and 3-D CAD software as necessary.
  • Communicate and ensure adequate and accurate information and drawings are transmitted between the mechanical layout specialist and fabricators.
  • Produce 3-D CAD models of prototypes by collaborating with product designers, technicians, engineers, and other manufacturing / fabrication professionals.
  • Create product design drawings, packaging specifications, facility layout, topographical design and other models as required.
  • Develop block diagrams for mechanical structures, as well as electrical and electronic schematics.
  • Follow ESFL standards for layering, dimensioning, text annotations and other CAD practices.
  • Review existing CAD drawings and designs to ensure adherence to established specifications and standards.
  • Edit, rework and update CAD drawing files as required by product changes.
  • Populate and maintain the CAD information repository database.
  • Assist the Estimating Department with related mechanical work.
  • Recommend, schedule and perform software improvements, upgrades, and / or purchases.
  • Ensure safety compliance in accordance with ESFL safety policy / procedures, ISO 18001 and OHSA requirements; manage environmental aspects per ISO 14001.
Key Requirements, Experience And Skills
  • Completion of a degree or diploma from a technical discipline, or equivalent fabrication and construction industry experience is required.
  • Completion of a College Metrology Technology program; or University Metrology degree program; or any Technical College program that includes Metrology; or Machinist License with Metrology experience is considered an asset.
  • 3–12 months (or more) experience operating a Laser Tracker or portable metrology software; or Machinist License with experience operating a Laser Tracker is an asset.
  • Generally knowledgeable in ASME and CSA codes.
  • Fundamental knowledge of 3-D drawing.
  • Knowledge in fabrication of piping and pressure vessels; extensive oil industry piping knowledge is an asset.
  • 3D scanning and point cloud manipulation experience is an asset.
  • Significant CAD experience in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CADWorx, Inventor, AC Plant 3D / AC MEP, Revit or other BIM tools (other packages considered).
  • Strong technical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in fabrication and construction environments.
  • Experience with carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum fabrication, piping components.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
