About the Company

Ekona Power is a Vancouver-based breakthrough energy technology company developing a novel methane pyrolysis platform for low-cost, clean hydrogen and carbon black production. Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead will drive the detailed design and development of Ekona's methane pyrolysis Gen 2 reactor. This role combines technical leadership, analytical expertise, project management and people leadership skills to advance our innovative clean energy solution from prototype to production.

Reporting Relationship

  • Reports to: Program Manager, Projects
  • Direct Reports: Mechanical Design Engineers

Primary Objectives

  • Lead the mechanical design and development of the Gen2 system.
  • Ensure technical excellence in all engineering deliverables.
  • Drive innovation while maintaining practical, manufacturable solutions.
  • Establish and maintain robust engineering documentation systems.
  • Build and maintain strong vendor/supplier relationships.

Job Responsibilities

Design Leadership

  • Lead detailed mechanical design efforts from prototype through development.
  • Establish and document design requirements and interfaces.
  • Conduct comprehensive engineering analyses including:
    • Thermal analysis
    • Failure mode analysis
    • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Technical Documentation and Quality

  • Create and maintain detailed design documentation.
  • Develop and oversee document control systems.
  • Implement change management procedures.
  • Produce detailed fabrication drawings.
  • Perform quality inspections of received components.
  • Manage and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM).

Project Management

  • Identify and mitigate technical risks through subsystem testing.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for component development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Lead technical decision-making processes.
  • Guide team members in documentation best practices.

Team Supervision

  • Assign and oversee the work of the mechanical engineering team:
    • Sign off on bi-weekly timesheets and vacation requests
    • Schedule regular 1:1 check-ins to review work and provide career support
    • Monitor performance and provide mentorship to more junior team members

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum 8 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams.
  • Expert knowledge of CAD software and engineering analysis tools.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation.
  • Knowledge of Windchill and Creo an asset.
