Job description

Mechanical Engineering Designer (Contract)

Join to apply for the Mechanical Engineering Designer (Contract) role at Natus Medical Incorporated.

Position: Mechanical Engineer (6-month Contract)

Location: Hybrid Role (3 days a week in Oakville Office)

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer (Contract) to support the design and development of mechanical sub-systems. This role will lead the mechanical development efforts from concept through design freeze, including 3D CAD design, simulation, prototyping, design-for-manufacturing, and supplier tooling readiness. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SolidWorks, plastic part design, mechanical simulations, and electromechanical integration for medical or consumer products.

Key Responsibilities
  1. 3D CAD Development: Create and manage SolidWorks 3D models / ePDM of enclosures, assemblies, and components including electronics integration, and cabling interfaces.
  2. 2D Drawings & Documentation: Generate detailed 2D engineering drawings, including GD&T, for prototype and production release.
  3. Simulation & Analysis: Conduct mold flow analysis, static stress simulations, and tolerance stack-ups to ensure design feasibility and robustness.
  4. Design for Assembly & Manufacturability (DFA / DFM): Optimize part design for injection molding, efficient assembly, and serviceability.
  5. Prototyping: Plan and execute rapid prototyping cycles across Proof-of-Concept to Pilot phases.
  6. Root Cause & Reliability: Support product reliability testing, failure analysis, and design corrective actions.
  7. Project Execution: Manage daily engineering tasks in support of project schedule, reporting progress, risks, and mitigation plans.
  8. Vendor Engagement: Collaborate with suppliers to support plastic injection molding, cable assemblies, and first article inspections.
  9. Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Work closely with Electrical, Systems Engineering, project management, and supply chain teams to meet product performance, cost, and timing targets.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of product development experience in electromechanical medical devices or consumer electronics.
  • Expert-level SolidWorks skills including assemblies, part design, and ePDM.
  • Hands-on experience with molded plastics, mechanical simulations, tolerance analysis, and prototyping techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of DFM, DFA, and design for reliability practices.
  • Knowledge of cable routing, strain relief, and connector design.
  • Excellent technical communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience working with global vendors and supporting tooling design reviews.
  • Ability to manage deliverables across multiple prototype phases.
  • Must be on-site a minimum of 3 days a week.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing wearables, mobile, or portable devices.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards (e.g., IEC 60601-1).
  • Knowledge of dFMEA, pFMEA, and manufacturing quality control plans.
