This position reports to R&D Engineer.

Your role and responsibilities

ABB Measurement & Analytics Plant in Quebec is a world leader in spectroscopy. Our contract engineering service is the largest Canadian supplier of space optical sensors used for monitoring greenhouse gases and global weather forecasting. Our plant is recognized for developing and manufacturing products that meet various industrial analysis needs daily. Joining one of Quebec's largest engineering departments, you will contribute to a dynamic, multidisciplinary team. As a mechanical engineer within the opto-mechanical team, you will handle the mechanical design, manufacturing, and commissioning of several product development projects. The ideal engineer has a strong physical sense, is passionate, enjoys multidisciplinary teamwork, is curious and eager to learn, and has tangible achievements in new product design.

  • Design instruments in compliance with requirements, costs, and deadlines.
  • Select and optimize manufacturing processes (CNC machining, molding, bending, 3-D printing, etc.).
  • Verify and seal plans according to geometric tolerancing standards.
  • Document mechanical designs thoroughly, establish tolerancing budgets, and inspection plans.
  • Supervise assembly, commissioning, and establish test plans for prototypes.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and present to clients at key milestones.
  • Contribute to planning and technical proposal tasks (estimation).
  • Occasionally support production activities.
Qualifications for the role
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with 5-10 years of experience in developing complex systems; knowledge of optical systems is an asset.
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, heat treatments, and surface treatments.
  • Understanding of geometric tolerancing principles.
  • Experience with structural and thermal FEA (asset).
  • Experience designing aerospace instruments or for harsh environments (asset).
  • Knowledge of high-pressure equipment standards (ASME) or explosive environments (ATEX) (asset).
  • Member of the OIQ.
  • Bilingual in French and English, with strong written and oral communication skills. French is required; English is needed for communication with outside Quebec clients.
