PRIMARY EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVES

The Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for providing overall guidance to a team of engineers, scientists and prototype production employees that are engaged in the design, development, manufacture and test evaluation of advanced lightweight combat helmets. Working as a liaison between design teams, management and customer representatives, the Mechanical Engineer III utilizes their broad expertise to provide technical insights and lead the team to successfully achieve their technical, schedule and cost management goals. The Mechanical Engineer III will participate in the development of design concepts using CAD tools, mock-ups and prototypes, including the validation of designs thru analysis, testing and trials. They will be a key member of the design and engineering teams and will participate in the new product development and product improvement efforts of the company. They will work alongside with the other departments to establish the design brief, including the concept, performance and production constraints and criteria to ensure manufacturability, durability and performance of the products. The Mechanical Engineer III will liaise with process and tool engineering, supply chain and operations to ensure transition of the designs into mass production. Within the Design Engineering team, the Mechanical Engineer III will be the Subject Matter Expert regarding technical documentation and specifications, drafting standards and GD&T. They will mentor junior Mechanical Engineers in the development of their capabilities, expertise and mastery of engineering best practices.

They must have exceptional learning abilities, creative problem-solving skills and will need to be a customer oriented self-starter who can work in a dynamic and evolving team environment.

SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

People:

  • Lead and/or participate in cross-functional teams responsible for developing new products and continuous improvement of fielded products.
  • Manage development projects for new combat helmets and combat helmet technology.

Process:

  • Participate in the establishment of design briefs, including the concept, assumptions, performance and production constraints and criteria.
  • Suggests, plans, performs or outsources all design/analytic work associated with mechanical engineering and composite armor design.
  • Select proper components, technologies, materials and manufacturing processes best suited for the application.
  • Develop and track engineering budgets: size, weight, min/max material conditions, etc.
  • Validate designs through testing, trials and documentation of findings.
  • Document specifications to respect for manufacturing of products.
  • Execute technical data management within the requirements of an Enterprise Resource Planning system.
  • Bill-of-material (BOM) creation and update.
  • Develop lightweight combat helmet solutions (processes, technologies, products) to meet customers’ requirements (weight, ballistic and non-ballistic performance).
  • Transition new products to Operations, including creation of process and product documentation.
  • Identify technical requirements for new processes and equipment. Coordinate with Operations, Engineering and Industrial design to procure required equipment; install, shake down and validate new equipment and processes and transition to production. Work with Operations (Quality Control) and Quality Assurance to identify root causes; develop and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support to Finance, Marketing and THS Product Management (cost analysis, bid support and new business development).
  • Identify and exploit new materials / technologies for combat helmet solutions.
  • Coordinate product testing internal and external to Galvion test lab.
  • Support and drive Montreal Armor Lab operational systems such as facility and equipment maintenance performed by internal and external resources, material inventory, Kanban restock and data systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance:

  • Demonstrate concepts thru sketches, mock-ups and prototypes.
  • Apply engineering best practices for modeling and/or design of experiments to limit the number of design iterations.
  • Develops physical and analytical tools to accelerate data collection and automate analysis.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Licensed to practice as a Professional Engineer in Quebec (OIQ) or another Canadian Province.
  • 10+ years of experience in product development.
  • Experience leading a small scientific or engineering team is a plus.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks FEA is a plus.
  • Understanding and ability to mentor Mechanical Engineering design calculations and techniques.
  • Knowledge of GD&T as per ASME Y14.5.
  • Knowledge of dynamics in addition to static design.
  • Familiarity with design and tests against impact and shocks.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-810 for environmental testing.
  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-31000A and/or ASME Y14.100 standards for drawing is a plus.
  • Good understanding of mechanical principles, tolerancing and strength of materials.
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
  • Manual skills and experience creating mock-ups and prototypes a plus.
  • Technical Data Management experience is a plus.
  • Understanding of manufacturing and operational principles.
  • Experience working with advanced composite materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of helmet forming techniques with advanced composite materials a plus.
  • Strong English language, verbal communication and writing skills required.
  • Multi-tasking, self-starter with strong execution and project management skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Military and Personal Protective Equipment Standards, a plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment (include physical requirements)

  • Low rate manufacturing environment with office area.
  • Some ballistic laboratory exposure and operation (potential lead hazard).
  • Operation of compression molding presses (up to 600 ton) and associated heating and cooling systems required.
  • Use of hand and power tools.
  • Frequent standing.
  • Must be capable to lift 50 lbs.
  • Some overseas and Canadian travel as needed with passport eligibility is required.
  • Frequent travel (approximately 50%) in North America required.
  • Ability to travel to the USA is a must.
