Overview
Merrick and Company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Designer to support the mechanical design of projects as part of a multidisciplinary team. This position is based in our Kanata, ON office. The client projects for this role require Canadian Citizenship.

The role involves all phases of mechanical design for Life Sciences, Nuclear, and National Security projects, from programming through construction administration, with opportunities in facility commissioning.
The salary range for this position is $104,000 - $127,000, depending on experience and skills.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate with the mechanical and multidisciplinary project teams to execute detailed design of complex facilities, including:
- Engineering calculations
- Creating detailed 3D models and construction drawings
- Preparing specifications and reports
- Performing site inspections, testing, and commissioning, which may involve travel within Canada and internationally
- Communicate effectively with clients and team members verbally and in writing
- Maintain expertise in applicable codes and standards for nuclear and biocontainment facilities in Canada and abroad
- Develop proficiency in REVIT and other relevant software
- Follow quality assurance procedures specific to projects
- Exercise independent judgment to complete design tasks
- Work independently and as part of a team in a hybrid work environment (office, remote, onsite)
Required Qualifications
- Experience in mechanical building design for government, academic, or private clients, including HVAC, plumbing/process, fire protection, and controls design
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
- Professional Engineer licensure in Ontario or another Canadian jurisdiction is preferred; if not licensed, candidate must demonstrate a plan to obtain licensure within two years, with a Mechanical engineering degree from an accredited university
- Experience in planning, calculations, equipment selection, schematic design, construction documentation, and construction administration
- Knowledge of laboratory design and construction is advantageous
- Experience with energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis for sustainability is a plus
- Proficiency in REVIT and AutoCAD
- Strong report writing and communication skills, including presentation skills
- Effective problem-solving skills applying mechanical design principles
- Ability to travel and hold a current passport; international travel may be required
- Canadian Citizenship is mandatory for this role
- Work at job sites, including active construction and commissioning, requiring PPE and access to elevated areas
- Travel within Canada, the USA, and overseas may be necessary
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to obtain Government of Canada Reliability Level security clearance; Level II Secret Clearance preferred
