Job summary

Manitoba Hydro is seeking a permanent Mechanical Engineer to join our Generation Design Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba. You will lead design activities for turbines, generators and associated systems, and contribute to project teams across small to medium initiatives.

The role requires a strong background in mechanical engineering with experience in stress analysis, FEA, welding, and drawing development using Inventor. Travel is required and a valid Manitoba driver’s licence is necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum six years related experience with two years design experience in generation assets.
  • Proficiency in stress analysis, FEA, fatigue analysis, joint design (fasteners and welds).
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor for 2D/3D drawings and interpreting historical drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design, assess, repair, upgrade, and manage Generation assets (turbines, generators, cranes, subsystems).
  • Lead small to medium project teams and development of engineering drawings.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff and liaise with other departments and vendors.
  • Perform design reviews of welding procedures and specifications.

Position Overview

We are seeking a permanent Mechanical Engineer to join our Generation Design Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Responsibilities
  • Assume professional responsibility for the design, assessment, repair, upgrade, and other tasks required to manage Generation assets such as turbines, generators, cranes, and auxiliary systems.
  • Participate on project teams and take a lead role on small to medium projects.
  • Participate in scope development and prepare studies, technical specifications, recommendations, design calculations, design packages, estimates, manuals, commissioning procedures and other various Engineering deliverables for Generation assets.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and skills to effectively manage Generation assets using demonstrated proficiency in at least the following mechanical engineering theory: Turbine and Generator Expertise, Stress Analysis, Finite Element Analysis, Technical Specification Development, Fatigue Analysis, Machine/Fastener Design, Quality Assurance and Weld Design.
  • Provide technical guidance to technical staff within the department and other departments. Liaise with other departments, divisions & business units for correlation of design criteria.
  • Lead the development of engineering drawings prepared by technical assistants and apply detailed knowledge of drawing best practices and complex geometric dimensions and tolerances.
  • Provide technical review of a variety of welding documents such as welding procedure specifications and qualifications.
  • Advise external consultants, suppliers, and contractors of Manitoba Hydro design requirements and review their deliverables to ensure they meet design criteria, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyse proposals, quotations, and tenders; prepare recommendations to award.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities and on-site tests; lead commissioning as required.
  • Monitor and control scope, schedule, and budget of assigned tasks.
Qualifications
  • Graduate in Mechanical Engineering from a University of recognized standing plus a minimum of six years of related experience with two years' design experience specific to the position.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
  • Working knowledge of the design of machinery, including knowledge and experience performing stress analysis, finite element analysis, fatigue analysis, and joint design (fasteners and welds).
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering design, codes, standards and practices as they pertain to generating stations and associated infrastructure as well as internal processes, procedures and standards.
  • Working knowledge of welding theory and code interpretation.
  • Working knowledge of the use and limitations of Autodesk Inventor for both 2D and 3D work, as well as experience interpreting historical engineering drawings.
  • Maintain an understanding of applicable engineering/safety standards and legislation.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute design projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others and participate on project teams.
  • Required to travel by all modes of transportation i.e. air, land and water.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's Licence.
Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $48.74-$67.29 Hourly, $93,398.24-$128,947.78 Annually.
