Job summary

Kal Tire is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in Vernon, BC to design mechanical/electromechanical systems, develop methodologies, and test specifications. You will evaluate systems, implement improvements, and ensure manufacturability in mining environments.

Strong CAD and analytical skills, plus field experience, are essential. You’ll lead projects, prepare detailed designs, and collaborate across teams while maintaining regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Involvement in Patent application process.
  • Involvement with Engineering Certification tooling and equipment.
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanical design for automation, motors, gears, pneumatics, robotics and vacuum systems.
  • Problem solving with ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Proactive, resourceful and highly motivated with good communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to support projects.
  • SolidWorks and Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Advanced Excel and Access databases.
  • Hands-on with equipment and tooling, plus good relationship building.
  • Strong research abilities; valid driver’s license (Class 5).

  • Recommend modifications after prototype testing.
  • Apply CAD and mathematical modelling for development.
  • Develop products by researching and testing manufacturing methods.
  • Produce product reports by collecting and summarizing data.
  • Provide engineering information for patent applications and processes.
  • Maintain compliance with government regulations; coordinate maintenance.
  • Train and guide technicians; keep knowledge current with workshops.
  • Contribute to team efforts and drive results as needed.

Mechanical Engineer

Role Description

This role designs mechanical and electromechanical products and systems by developing and testing specifications and methods.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluates mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting research programs; applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics and materials;
  • Design and implement cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability;
  • Develop, test and evaluate theoretical designs;
  • Ensure a product can be made reliably and will perform consistently in mining operating environments;
  • Manage projects using engineering principles and techniques;
  • Produce details of specifications and outline designs;
  • Recommend modifications following prototype test results;
  • Use research, analytical, conceptual and planning skills, particularly mathematical modelling and computer-aided design;
  • Develop mechanical and electromechanical products by researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; solicit observations from field operators;
  • Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends;
  • Provide engineering information by answering questions and requests;
  • Provide engineering information for patent application and process;
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations;
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special services;
  • Complete projects by training and guiding technicians;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies;
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Involvement in Patent application process
  • Involvement with Engineering Certification tooling and equipment
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical design and its application in automation industrial designs including specification or motors, gear, mechanical systems, pneumatics, robotic and vacuum systems
  • Critical thinking with exceptional problem solving skills, able to work independently or in team environment
  • Efficiently organize and plan work tasks to meet company goals
  • Proactive, resourceful & highly motivated with good communication skills and ability to work in high output environment
  • Travel as required to support projects
  • Strong knowledge and experience in Solidworks and Microsoft Office
  • Advance use of Excel and data bases (Access)
  • Hands on experience and willingness to work with equipment and tooling
  • Good personal relationship builder
  • Strong research abilities
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at an accredited university or college or equivalent combination of education and experience.
