Job description

Our client is a leading Canadian cost consultancy and risk advisory firm operating within the P3, infrastructure and construction market. They have immediate openings for a Mechanical & Electrical (MEP) Cost Consultant to join their growing teams across Canada. Salary $130,000-$180,000.

The Mechanical/Electrical Cost Consultant will report to an Associate Director. To assist Associate Director within the department, taking responsibility for start to end service delivery. To ensure that client objectives are met through the delivery of an effective service.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE of MEP Cost Consultant
  • +5 years of relevant experience
  • A recognized university degree
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations
SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS of MEP Cost Consultant
  • Commissions are managed to the right quality standards and are completed efficiently and on time
  • Service delivery on commissions is in line with the conditions of appointment
  • Develop strong relationships with clients and cross-functional team members
  • They work as an effective team member within the context of delivering a specific commission
  • General line management responsibilities are effectively discharged
  • Identify business development opportunities with existing and new clients, including cross-selling opportunities
  • Track margin levels and monthly fee/resource forecasts on all commissions
Key elements
  • Preparing Mechanical/Electrical Cost Management reports for all asset classes related to real estate throughout Canada
  • Interfacing with the client and other consultants, at all project stages
  • Assisting in research related to construction market conditions throughout Canada, including analysis of official published data
  • Assisting Associate Director in developing new business opportunities with existing and new clients
  • Working with Associate Directors and Directors to construct proposals for new work or variations for existing projects
  • Attendance at Client and Business Development Events
  • Identifying opportunities to improve cost management procedures, templates and products referring ideas to the appropriate line manager
  • Knowledge management – Input key information and learning generated from each commission
  • Process improvement – Identifying and acting upon ways to improve internal systems and processes referring ides to the appropriate line manager
  • Quality Control – Ensuring compliance with quality standards and participation in ISO audits
  • Preparing Construction Cost Estimate reports at all stages of design for commercial, institutional and residential projects throughout Canada
  • Managing estimating and cost planning activities to include taking ownership of and presenting the final cost plan
  • Applying Value Management techniques at the outset of a project and where appropriate involving client’s specialist Value Management team
  • Post-contract cost management
  • Manage cost analysis, cost checking and valuation work effectively
  • Participating in Value engineering, LEED analysis and Life Cycle costing
  • Taking a lead role in interfacing with the client and other consultants, at all project stages
  • Leading a cost management team, ensuring that it delivers on all of the above accountabilities
  • Identifying and acting upon opportunities to improve cost management procedures, templates and products and hence improve the service provided to clients
  • Financial management – Utilizing the tools provided keep track of the ongoing margin levels and monthly fee/resource forecasts for each commission
  • Manage post-contract cost variances and change control processes effectively
  • Produce monthly post-contract cost reports and presenting them to the client
  • Value engineering and life cycle costing
  • Negotiate and agree final accounts
  • Preparation / Quantification of Cost Plan Reports including Measurement of detailed quantities and unit pricing
  • Manage and mentor Junior and Intermediate Staff
  • Staff management – Inputting into the formal management of cost management team, to include 1st round recruitment interviews, input into resource management
  • Participate in Staff Performance Reviews
