ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Mechanical Designer will assist, based on original equipment manufacturer (OEM), in the designing, drafting, and detailing of mechanical components and systems for passenger railcars and locomotives undergoing refurbishment. This role will collaborate with engineers, project managers, and shop personnel to assist in the creating and refining of designs that enhance performance, efficiency, and longevity of mechanical components and systems.

MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Analyze existing components and systems to develop improved or custom solutions.
  • Reproduce or modify legacy rail component designs to meet modern industry specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., AAR, APTA, Transport Canada).
  • Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), exploded views, and assembly instructions for manufacturing teams.
  • Modify existing railcar component designs to accommodate new technologies, upgrades, or repairs.
  • Ensure proper fit, function, and manufacturability of mechanical components.
  • Design mounting structures, brackets, and mechanical assemblies for refurbished rail vehicles.
  • Participate in design reviews, testing, and validation of upgraded mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with technicians and suppliers to source, upgrade, or redesign parts.
  • Support manufacturing teams in troubleshooting and optimizing production processes.
  • Provide hands-on support during assembly and integration of mechanical components.
  • Assist in testing and performance evaluation of mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Materials Strategy & Project Development, Procurement) during the design phase to source components, fasteners, and materials.
  • Ensure quality control and compatibility with refurbishment project requirements.
  • Prepare engineering specifications, technical manuals, and design reports for refurbishment projects.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certification in 2D/3D CAD software or P.Eng designation is preferred.
  • 2–3 years of recent, relevant experience in mechanical design, drafting, creating detailed drawings, and applying various design models, methodologies, principles, and tools in a design/manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with refurbishment projects, reverse engineering, or component upgrades is preferred.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, materials, manufacturing processes, and industry regulations.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as APTA, AAR, and Transport Canada regulations related to rail vehicle design is preferred
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively and follow complex instructions.
  • Proven problem-solving skills in design-related challenges.
  • Creative and innovative thinking.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Valid driver’s license (required to attend off-site meetings, training, or company events).
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
  • Must be committed to company health and safety.
