Job summary

Daedal Systems seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to advance our industrialized plasma diagnostic platform. You will own instrument packaging, rapidly prototype hardware, and lead the mechanical design and lab setup for testing and deployment on fusion devices worldwide.

You will collaborate with physicists and engineers, build robust enclosures, run FEA analyses, and ensure GD&T-compliant drawings and documentation are in place. Based in Toronto, travel up to 20% is expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering Physics (mechanical) or Mechanical/Mechatronics with strong physics background.
• Minimum 3–5 years of post-graduate experience in practical mechanical design and hardware implementation.
• Experience packaging precision hardware, sensors, optics, RF/microwave, or radiation/X-ray systems.
• Proven rapid prototyping and 3D printing experience with design-build-test cycles.
• Strong fundamentals in statics, dynamics, thermal management, materials, and GD&T.

Responsibilities

• Design robust, field-ready enclosures and packaging for optical, RF/microwave, and X-ray diagnostics.
• Prototype lab testbeds and prototypes using CAD (SolidWorks) and 3D printing.
• Lead design and setup of Daedal’s lab for high-powered lasers and RF/X-ray equipment, including safety and layout.
• Build, commission, and operate mechanical systems critical to diagnostic operations.
• Perform analyses and FEA to validate designs in harsh environments.
• Collaborate with physicists and technicians; manage suppliers and fabrication partners.
• Create detailed drawings with GD&T and maintain BOMs and engineering docs.
