Job description

2899 - Meals on Wheels Volunteer Cleaner (Food Transport Carriers & Equipment)

Erin Mills Twin Arena, 3205 Unity Drive, Mississauga, Ontario

Goal

VON Canada is a national, not-for-profit, charitable home and community care organization. For more than 115 years, our nurses, therapists and other health care providers have cared for Canadians in their own homes. Today, we offer more than 75 home care, personal support, and community services designed to help people of all ages to get healthy and stay healthy. Our team of more than 5,000 staff and 9,000 volunteers serves Canadians in more than 1,200 communities across our country. Especially during COVID-19, our Meals on Wheels program has taken on particular importance. To support it, we need to fill a Volunteer Cleaner volunteering role, which will ensure that the equipment used to carry the food that we deliver (cold & hot) as part of Meals on Wheels is properly cleaned and sanitized, then accounted for and organized to receive food for further deliveries. This role is a critical 'link' in the chain that will contribute towards sustaining the health of VON clients. During COVID-19, strict health & safety procedures will be followed at the food depot, plus the VON abides by 'contactless delivery' during COVID-19.

Description

The VON has been operating successful Meals on Wheels programs for many years, and we have never forgotten that the success of delivery of quality food to those who cannot get out to shop or cannot cook for themselves is largely due to a true team of capable, dedicated volunteers. Each volunteer enjoys a 'role' that supports the team and is vital to the program.

A key 'link in the chain' are our Volunteer Cleaners (Food Transport Carriers & Equipment). Here's a brief overview of what you can expect upon taking up this role:

  • Intake, spray and wipe the food carrier bags with sanitizer, plus other equipment that includes clipboards and laminated sheets
  • Clean any plastic bins that are usually left inside of the food carrier bags
  • Collection (or recycle) of cardboard returned
  • If there are heating and/or cooling pads in the returned carrier bags, these are thoroughly cleaned, as well
  • Use forms provided to account for and track the food delivery system equipment, so that every item is cleaned, organized, and none is misplaced
  • Move the food carrier bags and accessories to a designated location for use in the next shift (usually a VON vehicle)

VON IS IN IMMEDIATE NEED! Volunteers with profiles in Volunteer MBC's Referral System can 'click' the yellow box 'Apply Now!' to send your name/contact information to the VON, in respect to the position. Other ways to reach the VON about this volunteering opportunity are found in How to Contact, below. After you apply, please monitor your 'Junk/Spam' folders, plus leave space in your voicemail, for communications from the VON. Your interest is deeply appreciated!

  • A great opportunity to get out of the house and contribute to those in your local community who need assistance
  • Volunteer with a long established, highly respected community service organization
  • Fill an essential, critical 'role', and in doing so 'network' and build your community 'connectivity'
  • Make a direct impact by what you do
  • Enjoy personal satisfaction together with volunteer recognition
  • A Reference, upon request, will be available upon successful completion of your volunteer engagement
Qualifications
  • You recognize the need to assist those who cannot sufficiently or adequately feed themselves, and how critical their needs are in your local community, especially during COVID-19
  • You're ready and able to support the VON Meals on Wheels program as a committed, successful team player (moderate physical activity)
  • You're available WEEKLY from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM
  • Prior experience is not necessary, but being organized and possessing a capacity for attention to detail are definite assets
  • As you will be an important 'link in a chain', reliability and punctuality are essential
  • Dressing appropriately for the role, plus strict adherence to COVID-19 Health & Safety requirements/procedures

SCREENING will be virtual (remote), by way of telephone/email/online interviewing.

Time Commitment

This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2024-06-10
