Goal

VON Canada is a national, not-for-profit, charitable home and community care organization. For more than 115 years, our nurses, therapists, and other health care providers have cared for Canadians in their own homes. Today, we offer more than 75 home care, personal support, and community services designed to help people of all ages get healthy and stay healthy. Our team of more than 5,000 staff and 9,000 volunteers serves Canadians in more than 1,200 communities across our country. 'Meals on Wheels' has our volunteers delivering hot and/or frozen nutritious meals to our clients' homes, and in doing so all involved contribute towards sustaining the health of VON clients. DURING the COVID-19 Emergency, strict HEALTH & SAFETY procedures are being followed, including 'contactless delivery'. A critical aspect of our connectivity to our clients is the need to ensure they do not have symptoms associated with COVID-19, and we're implementing a TELEPHONE SCREENING PROGRAM for that purpose, conducted by volunteers under the supervision of the local chapter of VON Canada.

Description

This role is both essential and quite straightforward:

  • Following a format (questions) provided by the VON, you will make friendly phone calls from your home ('virtually', remotely).
  • You will be provided with a list of special clients to call.
  • As each call proceeds, you will log the call, conduct a verbal screening (record responses to set questions), then report to the local supervisor about the status of COVID-19 for each client (any other concerns brought up in conversation should be communicated as well).
  • Weekly engagement may be one or more days from Monday through Friday in the morning (9:00 AM to 10:30 AM) > CURRENT NEED is FRIDAY.
  • Volunteers for this 'role' are expected to commit to a weekly engagement for a MINIMUM of 6 MONTHS.

Qualifications

  • Volunteer engagement for a MINIMUM of 6 months, preferably well beyond that.
  • Friendly, engaging, happy to converse by telephone with 'older adults' about COVID-19 and capacity to participate in the VON 'Meals on Wheels'.
  • Solid oral/written ENGLISH (fluency in another language is always welcome).
  • You are committed and capable of adhering to a weekly schedule, plus you are detail-oriented, careful about recording/maintaining records.
  • Reliable access to a telephone, and to the Internet (with at least a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or similar device).
  • Able to follow our training and ongoing supervision.
Time Commitment

This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2024-06-10. Shifts are available on the following days: Monday Morning, Tuesday Morning, Wednesday Morning, Thursday Morning, Friday Morning.

WEEKLY: Shifts cover Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM > Volunteers will arrange their hours with the VON. OVERALL COMMITMENT: 6 MONTHS MINIMUM
