DESCRIPTION
The McPhee Artist Development Program (MADP) Manager leads Calgary Opera’s training program for aspiring Canadian opera singers.
Since 2006, the McPhee Program has served as a bridge between academic training and the professional world of opera, offering experience and practical skills necessary to succeed as a self-employed artist. Each season, up to eight McPhee Artists are welcomed for a minimum of 22 weeks, often spanning two consecutive seasons of training and performance.
As a member of a four-person artistic staff team, the MADP Manager reports to the Artistic Director and collaborates with the General Director & CEO, as well as the Operations, Production, Development, and Marketing teams. They oversee MADP faculty, instructors, and other subject matter experts, and work with partners and community organizations to enhance Calgary Opera’s civic engagement.
The opera landscape in Canada has undergone significant changes recently. Calgary Opera encourages applications from artists interested in balancing this role with other professional commitments, or those shifting focus from artistic production or performance to professional training. Residency in Calgary is required for the duration of the MADP contract periods.
Calgary Opera’s core mission involves bringing together McPhee Artists, audiences, donors, and the community through events, performances, and programming. Most activities are scheduled during weekday evenings, weekends, and special events. Employees typically work an eight-hour day (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM), but the MADP Manager’s responsibilities require flexibility in work hours and location, including:
