Job description

Senior Director, Information Security & Privacy

Established in 1910, McElhanney is an employee-owned company that provides surveying, engineering, GIS and remote sensing, community and transportation planning, landscape architecture, environmental services, and more. With more than 1400 employees across over 30 locations in Western Canada and a specialty office in Florida (USA), McElhanney has established itself as an industry leader in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, Transportation & Transit sector, Energy & Resources sector, and Cities & Communities sector. McElhanney is an organization that takes great pride in its award-winning culture, long history, international reputation and tradition of employee ownership. The company is known for doing the ‘right thing’ for its employees and clients and has been recognized as one of Canada's Best Managed Companies, one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and one of BC’s Top Employers.

McElhanney has grown significantly in recent years, nearly doubling in size over the past 5 years. Under the guidance of an exceptional and diverse leadership team, the company is at an exciting point in its history. McElhanney is positioned to continue to grow into new markets and geographies and enhance its reputation as an industry leader. As part of this growth plan, McElhanney recognizes the importance of transforming and building out its technology capabilities and is now seeking a highly skilled and experienced cybersecurity and privacy professional to fill the role of Senior Director, Information Security & Privacy (CISO) to lead the strategic development and oversight of McElhanney’s cybersecurity and privacy programs. This is a transformative leadership role, critical to protecting the integrity of the company's digital infrastructure, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting a culture of security across the organization.

Reporting to the Vice President, Technology, the successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to both executive leadership and the Board, while working closely with operational teams, IT, Legal, and business units to build the cybersecurity and privacy program. The mandate is to build a cybersecurity and privacy program, supported by a small and agile team, that is modern, adaptable, and aligned with business needs. In this strategic role, the CISO will interact and present regularly to the McElhanney Executive Committee and Board and need to be able to influence at all levels of the organization.

The successful candidate will be a proven IT security leader in a dynamic multi-site organization who has had to build out an IT security practice in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment. This role requires a hands-on leader who brings deep expertise in cybersecurity and privacy governance, a pragmatic approach to risk management, and communication skills to translate complex technical concepts into actionable insights across all levels of the organization. With the opportunity to shape and scale McElhanney’s security posture from the ground up, this is more than a compliance role. It is a chance to lead with purpose, safeguard critical assets, and help build a resilient and secure future for McElhanney’s employees, clients, and communities.

The role is ideally based in Vancouver.
