The Master is the first in command of the vessel and is responsible for all shipboard and portside operations. The Master serves as the supervisor of shipboard personnel and ensures crew compliance with regulatory and MMTL policy.
Main Responsibilities
- Ensuring the safe and efficient loading and unloading of product from the vessel (docking and discharge).
- Ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of goods to pre-designed destinations (maneuvering, operation of navigational and radio equipment, steering, ballast water management, navigation of rivers, and line-handling operations, crew management).
- Managing all shipboard operations.
- Implementing the Safety Management System onboard the vessel. Supervising and conducting safety activities including drills and meetings.
- Directing the crew in emergency situations to protect safety, the environment, and company assets.
- Maintaining vessel compliance with applicable regulations from Transport Canada and local authorities.
- Investigating all incidents involving crew injuries, environmental pollution, and damage to company assets to the highest standards.
- Exhibiting exemplary leadership behavior.
- Possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Captains must hold the following minimum qualifications, subject to vessel manning requirements:
Marine Emergency Duties and Safety Certifications
- MED training for survival craft, rescue boats, and advanced firefighting
- MED for senior officers
- SEN II ECDIS Generic
- Specialized Oil Tanker Training certificate with Transport Canada Level 2 Endorsement
- General Operators Certificate
- Bridge Resource Management training
- Certificate of Proficiency as a Ship Security Officer
- Valid passport and marine medical
- Thorough understanding and experience with marine industry regulations, including ISM code
- Experience as a Captain of a tanker vessel of 3000 GRT or more, or similar size vessel as First Mate
- Pilotage Certificates PM2 for Cornwall District, District 1 LO, District 2
- Tanker experience
- Experience in carriage of Bitumen Asphalt (asset)
- Dual Fuel LNG training as per IGF Code (Advanced)
- Eligibility to enter the US
