Job description

Whytecliff Agile Learning Centres (walc.ca) in Burnaby BC is seeking a full-time experienced Math Teacher (Grades 8-12) to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a fun, dynamic, and innovative community and to make a real difference in kids’ lives!

A Little About Us

Whytecliff is a BC Ministry of Education accredited independent high school for grades 8-12. Our Burnaby campus is comfortably small (and feels less like a school and more like an oversized home), with a tight-knit team of 8 staff serving up to 32 students. Here, in a calm, caring, and collaborative setting, we serve a variety of truly great kids who arrive with an array of diverse learning needs and social-emotional challenges (such as anxiety, depression, ASD, dyslexia, and ADHD, among others).

Whytecliff is unique. More than just a school, we stand apart as being one of the few programs in North America to seamlessly integrate education and positive youth development work (with a special emphasis on promoting positive mental health & wellness, social connectedness, and personal development). We use a strengths-based, person-centered approach that is transformative for many of the youth attending our programs. Not only do our unique programs work wonders, kids love being here too: "Thank you for the best year of my life! I can't wait to come back!"

Each year we evolve new exciting opportunities as we seek to build upon the gifts, strengths, talents, and interests of the kids in the program. This year we began offering a hiking club in partnership with Outward Bound, and we're incorporating a special emphasis on cross-curricular and project-based learning!

A Little About Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidates will have experience teaching gr 8-12 Math in BC, a Bachelor of Education or an undergraduate degree in the relevant discipline and valid certification (or eligibility) with the BC Teacher Regulation Branch. Equally important, we look for staff that are kind, creative, caring, good active listeners, love working with children, and have an infectious love for their subject(s)... someone who has a positive, engaging presence and uplifting energy with children, and a desire to make a meaningful difference in their lives.

Our educational approach is ‘cross-curricular’ and highly project-based—meaning that teachers often work hand-in-hand with kids and fellow colleagues to help create fun, engaging projects and lessons that can tap into kids’ passions and interests and tie together multiple subjects. Bonus points if you have an interest and ability to teach or co-teach other subjects--either in addition to or in conjunction with Math!!! (i.e. Arts, STEM, P.E., Career/Life, Tech, Foods, etc.)

The position is also ‘transdisciplinary’—meaning that teachers often work with youth in other capacities outside traditional classroom duties and activities (such as mentoring, facilitating creative/collaborative projects to foster 21st century skills, leading field trips and connecting with community resources, and keeping in greater touch with kids' families).

A driver’s license is preferred.
