They handle a variety of items such as food, fuel, heavy machinery, spare parts, stationery, and clothing.

The primary responsibilities of Materiel Management Technicians include:

  • Managing the purchasing, warehousing, shipping, receiving, stock control, and disposal of obsolete stock and equipment
  • Receiving, handling, and preparing items for shipment
  • Operating military vehicles weighing up to 10 tons and materials-handling equipment such as forklifts
  • Processing invoices and preparing shipping documents
  • Ordering materials from internal and external sources and purchasing supplies
  • Delivering supplies and providing services to operational units
  • Performing recordkeeping, stocktaking, and inventory control
  • Maintaining accounting and financial records
  • Processing and coordinating repair and disposal functions

Work environment

Materiel Management Technicians may work in Canada or be deployed abroad to support Royal Canadian Navy, Army, or Royal Canadian Air Force operations. Those on ships face unique challenges living and working at sea. They may stand duty watches and perform ship's husbandry duties. Army-based technicians participate in operations and training with combat teams, including driving and maintaining vehicles. RCAF support personnel may be deployed to remote locations on short notice.

If you choose a career in the Regular Force, after completing all required training, you will be assigned to your first base. While postings are flexible, accommodations can't always be guaranteed, and relocations are likely. Joining the Primary Reserve Force involves training with a specific Reserve unit, working part-time, usually one night per week and some weekends, with options for full-time employment. Reserve members serve at CAF locations across Canada and may volunteer for deployments.

Entry plans

No previous work experience or career-related skills are required. CAF recruiters can assist in determining if your interests and attributes match this occupation.

The minimum education requirement is completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec. Foreign education may be accepted.

Training

The initial training is the Basic Military Qualification course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, which is physically demanding. Materiel Management Technicians then attend the Canadian Forces Logistics Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, for approximately 70 days, learning topics such as customer inquiries, material handling, warehousing, and administrative functions.

Opportunities for specialized skills development and advanced training are available, including courses in hazardous material control, military contracts, personnel management, and business planning.

Part-time options

This position is available part-time with the Primary Reserve at various locations across Canada. Reserve members serve part-time at their local unit, with pay during training, and may volunteer for full-time positions or deployments.

Reserve members train to the same standards as Regular Force personnel, starting with basic military training and progressing to specialized skills training. Training duration is about 70 days at the Canadian Forces School of Administration and Logistics in Borden, Ontario. Reserve members serve part-time, usually evenings and weekends, with pay and benefits comparable to full-time members, and may contribute to a pension plan.
