Job description

Materials Testing and Inspection Technician

GEI is seeking respected professionals who aspire to have a positive impact on GEI’s geotechnical design team and are interested in working collaboratively with a talented team of design, management, and technical leaders. GEI will provide a unique opportunity to collaborate across multiple practices to successfully deliver geotechnical design/engineering solutions for our clients.

The Canadian operation of GEI is expanding in the Ontario market and GEI is looking for a Materials Testing & Inspection Technician to join our existing team, working on projects across Ontario. Positions are available in GEI’s Materials Testing and Inspection Departments located in Barrie, Markham or Guelph, Ontario, and includes regular full-time work (40 hours per week).

Responsibilities
  • Compaction testing using a portable nuclear gauge for soils, granular materials, asphalt, etc.
  • Sampling of soil, granulars and asphalt for laboratory testing.
  • Concrete sampling, field testing and casting of test cylinders.
  • Earthworks subgrade, foundation, and reinforcing steel inspections.
  • Geotechnical laboratory testing (i.e. water contents, hydrometers, etc.).
  • Materials laboratory testing (i.e. proctors, granular sieves, concrete, etc.).
  • Maintain testing equipment in a good condition and maintain calibration.
  • Prepare field inspection reports.
  • Communicate field results with contractors and supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • College diploma in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) required.
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Interested in teamwork, autonomous, and organized.
  • Good physical condition.
  • Valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle which may be used to travel to and from site.
  • Ability to work out of town when needed.
  • Available to work on different shifts and schedules.
  • Available to work on weekends on short notice.
  • Attention to detail and problem solving.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work conditions and schedules on short notice.
  • Ability to listen, learn, and apply as instructed by immediate supervisor.
