Job description

Materials Science Engineer

As our new Materials Science Engineer, your primary goal is to develop, characterize, and optimize the nickel-titanium shape memory alloys at the core of Smarter Alloys' product lines. You will work hands-on with advanced alloys and thermomechanical processing to understand how composition and processing parameters drive functional material behavior — and apply that understanding to real products.

This role offers rare access to proprietary SMA processing technology and a direct line between your experimental work and commercial outcomes across medical, dental, cleantech, and industrial applications.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in metallic materials who can design and execute experiments, analyze results rigorously, and translate findings into process or product improvements. You will have real autonomy to drive projects while collaborating across R&D, production, and quality.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead and support NiTi shape memory alloy R&D activities, including materials development, device testing, and process optimization
  • Perform materials characterization and testing using a range of techniques including optical microscopy, SEM, DSC, thermomechanical testing, tensile testing, hardness testing, and laser processing
  • Apply statistical methods to analyze and interpret experimental results
  • Develop deep working knowledge of Smarter Alloys' proprietary multi-memory processing technology and contribute to its continued development
  • Collaborate across R&D, production, and quality to support new product introduction and ongoing process improvement
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in an R&D environment
  • Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques
  • Solid understanding of physical metallurgy and materials engineering principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication of technical information
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Background in shape memory alloys or functional metallic materials
  • Experience with laser processing or advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Data-driven approach to project execution and process development
  • Experience working within a Quality Management System
  • Exposure to automation, machine learning, or materials informatics
