Position Details

Transportation and Infrastructure - Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

The position of Materials Inspector I is technical work in the sampling, testing and inspection of asphalt, soils and concrete materials used in transportation/highway construction and maintenance. The Materials Inspector I is required to inspect and collect samples on site or in pit/quarry production locations; conducts (QC/QA) testing procedures on construction and maintenance materials; calculates results to determine if it meets specifications; documents and prepares technical data; as well as other related duties as assigned.

Screening Criteria

  1. Completion of a Civil Engineering Technology Program. Equivalencies will be considered.
  2. Experience with procedures and practices applied in the inspection and testing of soils and highway materials.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Knowledge of procedures and practices applied in the inspection and testing of soils and highway materials.
  2. Knowledge of routine laboratory methods and practices.
  3. Knowledge of safety regulations, policies and practices associated with sampling, testing and inspection of materials for transportation infrastructure.
  4. Ability to make independent decisions and solve problems.
  5. Ability to assess and evaluate multiple issues and balance competing demands in a dynamic environment.
  6. Professionalism.

Conditions of Offer

  1. Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 license.
  2. Recent driver’s abstract satisfactory to the Employer.

Conditions of Acceptance

  1. Extensive travel throughout the province will be required.
  2. Position may often require significant, compensated overtime.
  3. Lifting or moving objects or physically handling materials between 25 - 50 lbs. such as asphalt, rock, aggregate and concrete samples is a regular occurrence.
  4. Standing and walking is required for extended periods of time.
