Job Summary

The materials engineer will create, optimize and monitor concrete mix designs for a variety of structural and architectural precast concrete products. This position is responsible for working collaboratively to guide and support various departments including quality control, engineering, production and field operations. The materials engineer will be detail oriented with a focus on accuracy and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate must be a problem solver with hands-on leadership skills who thrives in a fast-paced multi-project environment. The initial training period will be focused within the area of precast concrete, but as the materials engineer grows into their role, they will also support our Ontario Ready-Mix company as a mix design subject matter expert.

Responsibilities

  • Design, monitor, troubleshoot and optimize high performance concrete mixes for all precast plants including specialty mixes for structural and architectural precast concrete wall panels
  • Support with mix design and troubleshooting for ready mix products
  • Pre-Bid review of project specifications
  • Planning and coordinating field/plant and laboratory testing of construction materials
  • Oversee all aspects of concrete production and ensure compliance with relevant standards
  • Provide technical understanding of deterioration mechanisms of concrete and methods to mitigate as well as rehabilitate affected concrete structures
  • Develop repair procedures for defective product which permanently restores appearance, durability and structural capacity
  • Modify or implement procedures which maintain high product quality
  • Other duties as assigned

Technical Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of practical engineering experience within a relevant field, preferably focusing on concrete mix-designs
  • Civil Engineering Degree, preferably with a focus on concrete materials engineering
  • Professional Engineering designation or an Engineer in Training with P. Eng eligibility
  • Supervisory experience in the concrete industry would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of CSA, ASTM and MTO Standards
  • Relevant concrete testing certifications such as ACI FT Level 1 and ACI-SCC would be considered strong assets
  • In-depth knowledge of design and control of concrete mixtures
  • Proficiency with concrete mix designs (Including Self Consolidating Concrete) and familiarity with admixture systems and cement interactions

  • Experience with time management and creating Key Performance Indicators (“KPI’s”)
  • Desire to work well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and customer-focused environment
  • Willingness to travel between plants as well as to project construction sites as required
  • Must be adaptable to overtime where required to meet project / production deadlines
