Job description

Midwives Association of BC

The Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC) is the professional non-profit association representing midwives in BC. The Association works to sustain the midwifery profession through advocacy, the ongoing development and enhancement of its services, and positioning midwives as primary care providers.

MABC collaborates with its 400+ members to strengthen access to high-quality, culturally safe perinatal and sexual health care across the province—through education, strategic programs, and policy leadership.

Midwives walk alongside families and life-givers through moments of deep transition, offering skilled, compassionate care throughout the reproductive journey. Join us in our mission to make a meaningful impact on the lives of midwives and the communities they serve.

We are currently hiring a Marketing and Communications Director to support our growing initiatives. If you're passionate about systems change and want to contribute to the future of midwifery in BC, we’d love to hear from you!

Position Summary

The Marketing and Communications Director is a collaborative and strategic leadership role responsible for shaping and elevating MABC’s public presence and internal engagement. This role leads the development and execution of a values-aligned, equity-centered communications and marketing strategy that amplifies the voice of midwives, builds trust with members, and strengthens MABC’s advocacy efforts.

The Director leads all external and internal communications across digital, print, media, and advocacy platforms. They also supervise and mentor the Communications Coordinator, building department capacity and cross-functional collaboration across the organization. This position is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in strategic communications, member engagement, government relations, and team development, who thrives in a people-first, mission-driven environment.

Shared Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively within and across teams to ensure high-quality programs and services for members.
  • Provides support to colleagues during periods of high workload.
  • Attends and participates in staff and team meetings.
  • Develop an annual work plan with the direct supervisor in the context of the MABC strategic plan.

Main Responsibilities

1- Strategic Marketing & Communications

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that aligns with MABC’s strategic priorities and JEDI commitments.
  • Lead message development and storytelling across all channels, ensuring clarity, consistency, and cultural safety in voice and tone.
  • Oversee the planning, production, and distribution of newsletters, reports, advocacy materials, social media, and website content.
  • Monitor emerging trends in nonprofit and health sector communications and innovate accordingly.
  • Support the Board and Executive Director with key communications, including reports, updates, and presentations.

2- Government Relations & Advocacy

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Strategic Officer to craft persuasive, member-informed communications that support MABC’s advocacy priorities.
  • Develop briefing notes, issue backgrounders, open letters, and campaign messaging targeted at government and public stakeholders.
  • Ensure alignment of advocacy and member messaging, especially during contract negotiations, public campaigns, and crisis communications.

3- Media Relations & Public Affairs

  • Act as media liaison for MABC, proactively building relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • Draft and disseminate press releases, op-eds, media kits, and other public-facing content.
  • Provide media training for staff and board spokespeople and manage media interviews and inquiries.
  • Lead crisis communications planning and execution, offering responsive and thoughtful messaging in high-stakes situations.

4. Inclusive and Member-Centered Communication

  • Apply a cultural safety and anti-racism lens to all communications, ensuring relevance and respect across diverse midwifery communities.
  • Create and apply member personas and segmentation strategies to tailor messaging across rural, urban, Indigenous, and equity-deserving groups.
  • Foster two-way communication with members through listening channels and “what we heard” feedback mechanisms.

5. Team Development & Cross-Organizational Collaboration

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership as a key member of MABC’s senior leadership team, contributing to organizational planning, cross-functional collaboration, and capacity-building across departments.
  • Foster a respectful, collaborative, and strengths-based culture; support inclusive workforce planning and build internal communications literacy across teams, including Strategic Initiatives, Programs, and Member Services.
  • Supervise, coach, and support the Communications Coordinator, helping to develop their confidence, strategic thinking, and executional skills.

Main Qualifications

We welcome applicants with a range of educational, professional, and lived experiences. If you meet most (but not all) of the criteria below and are passionate about the role, we encourage you to apply.

Preferred Experience and Knowledge:

  • A post-secondary degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated depth of experience in marketing and/or communications, typically gained through 7 or more years in the field, including at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity. Equivalent combinations of formal, informal, or community-based leadership experience are welcome.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising or mentoring junior staff in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with tools such as WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva/Adobe, Google Suite, and CRM systems.
  • Experience working within BC’s health system, member-based associations, not-for-profit organizations, or Indigenous communities and organizations is a strong asset.

What We Have to Offer

  • A full-time permanent hybrid position based in British Columbia
  • Salary range of $95,000 – $105,000
  • Comprehensive extended health and dental benefits
  • 3 weeks paid vacation plus generous sick and wellness leave
