Job Summary

ReMBC is funded by the Joint Standing Committee (JSC) on Rural Issues through the Rural Education Action Plan (REAP). The specific purpose of ReMBC is to connect BC’s rural students with near-peer mentors who are college and university students to support their transition into post-secondary health science education programs. ReMBC provides online mentoring through a high school stream and a rural undergraduate pre-health stream, and administers REAP’s high school strategy by coordinating presentations and events.


Within the eMentoring Program team, the Marketing and Communications Assistant is responsible for promoting and marketing ReMBC and its offerings, with the goal of widening our exposure and recruiting new participants. This position also supports the internal communications needs of the program, including assisting with reporting and communications to participants.


Organizational Status
Reports to and works closely with the eMentoring Program Manager. Also works closely with the Indigenous Initiatives Manager, the Senior Administrative Coordinator and meets regularly with the other Principal Investigators at REAP and UBC Faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine. Interacts with community partners and program participants both within and outside of UBC.

Work Performed

  • Coordinates, maintains, and publishes to all ReMBC’s social media channels, including: X, Instagram Tiktok, Facebook, YouTube, and others. Provides routine updates to social media content.
  • In close consultation with the eMentoring Program Manager, oversees the digital presence and voice of social media channels
  • Assists with the promotion and marketing of the program to potential participants, including designing and sending mass emails, updating websites, creating registration pages, flyers, mailers, promotional items, etc.
  • Assists with research and database creation and maintenance for potential marketing targets.
  • Researches new markets, communications outlets, and new marketing/promotional strategies.
  • Monitors and reports on statistics of social media accounts and post engagement; recommends new approaches as needed.
  • Assists with the evaluation of the success of marketing and promotional strategies, and adapts tactics based on findings.
  • Assists in developing and supporting content marketing strategies, including authoring and coordinating success stories, blog posts, videos, participant features, etc.
  • Administers the ReMBC’s e-newsletter system. This includes drafting and distributing the monthly ReMBC’s e-newsletter and various e-campaigns using established templates, reviewing and editing content submissions for fact-checking, and liaising with the eMentoring team regarding promotion needs.
  • Assists with the designing and editing of reports, knowledge translation items, and other organizational documents.
  • Responds to emails coming into the program inbox related to communication, newsletter or events and sends reminders when needed
  • Keeps up-to-date with industry trends, developments, new techniques and copyright and intellectual property regulations.
  • Attends events and recruitment activities to promote the program. Must be willing to travel and work outside of regular office hours as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Judgment, initiative and tact is required when communicating with faculty members, staff, students, volunteers and faculty partners, as well as when coordinating projects within the unit. All communication is representative of the Faculty, ReMBC and REAP, and should be conducted in a professional and formal manner. Inappropriate judgment could potentially damage the reputation of the Faculty, ReMBC and REAP, and could possibly have a negative impact on future partnerships and working relationships.

Supervision Received
Works independently under supervision of the eMentoring Program Manager. The incumbent works independently and refers problems, especially if recurring or ongoing, to the eMentoring Program Manager for direction. May recommend solutions or process improvements.

Supervision Given
Is not required to supervise, but will occasionally coordinate and oversee social content authored by volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation, plus two years of post-secondary education, plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree in arts, communications, or marketing preferred
  • Proven ability to create different media, including artistic and written creativity, and video creation.
  • Ability to explain the program and its offerings and act as a spokesperson for the program at events and gatherings.
  • Ability to effectively use Office365 software and Wordpress at an intermediate level
  • Ability to effectively use content management and email marketing software
  • Knowledge of and ability to use social media platforms at an intermediate level
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities; prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines; and be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and issues, plan ahead, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • High level of enthusiasm, diplomacy, and professionalism.
