About Us

The Department of Energy promotes the sustainable use of energy resources to increase Nova Scotia’s energy security, support job creation, grow the economy, and create social benefits. We work towards fighting climate change by helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We also oversee the development of marine renewable energy resources.

The Marine Renewables Division is responsible for supporting these efforts by working to develop marine renewable energy resources, including tidal stream and offshore wind. As an Intern in the Marine Renewables Division, you will collaborate on research, policy, and programs related to marine renewable energy and assist in administering the Marine Renewable-energy Act. You will work collaboratively as a member of an integrated, multi-disciplinary team and with other government agencies and external stakeholders.

  • Conduct research on policy, legislation, and practices in other jurisdictions related to marine renewable energy.
  • Support the preparation of briefings, presentations and consultations, background papers, briefing notes for ministerial use, business cases, and submissions to senior staff as required.
  • Support data collection, analyses, and metrics.
Summary of Position
  • Support the team in developing and advising on strategies, policies, programs, and initiatives related to Marine Renewables. Tasks will include in-depth research and complex analysis of information and data to inform policy decisions.
  • You will work as part of a team contributing to developing, coordinating, and implementing consultations and engagement initiatives that meet the objectives of departmental priorities and strategies.
  • The successful candidate should have a background in Policy, Environmental Management, Science, or Sustainability, Resource Management, Marine Management or Affairs, or other relevant experience that can support our projects and initiatives. Strong skills in research, analysis, and critical thinking are a must.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of provincial energy initiatives and have working knowledge and understanding of sustainable energy policies, issues, trends, and practices in other jurisdictions.
  • The position will be required to work independently and show initiative. The position must also be effective in working in a team situation and establishing collaborative working relationships. Experience and knowledge of public policy analysis, development, and program implementation are desired.
Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will be a fourth year undergraduate student or graduate student, registered in a cooperative education program, and returning to school in the next applicable semester of a relevant field of study. They also would have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment.

An offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer.
