POSITION SUMMARY

Roe Environmental Inc. is seeking marine mammal observers and hydroacoustic technicians to provide environmental monitoring for the construction of a marine terminal at the Woodfibre LNG project near Squamish, BC.

Marine Mammal Observers will be responsible for conducting visual observations for marine mammals. Hydroacoustic technicians will deploy and operate hydrophone monitoring equipment. The roles are individually dedicated, but may be interchangeable for candidates with experience, or the desire to develop professional skills.

Long hours at monitoring stations on barges, boats and land shelters may be required during certain construction periods.

There may be opportunities to diversify into separate environmental technician roles, including monitoring of sensitive construction works, water quality sampling, wildlife monitoring and erosion and sediment control inspections.

POSITION TERM

Positions available for immediate start and start dates in July/August/September. All positions with a temporary contract to February 2026.

Opportunity for continued full-time employment.

POSITION LOCATION

The position will involve monitoring on the Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish, BC. Candidates from outside of the immediate Squamish area can expect to be housed in a private room on the Floatel (converted cruise ship) moored on site during their shift.

REQUIREMENTS

• Canadian residency or current/valid work permit is required- international applicants without Canadian residency or work permit will not be considered
• Position to require shift work - typically 2 weeks on, 1 weeks off.
• Position will require both day and night shift
• Normal working days are likely to be up to 10 - 12 hours.

PREFERRED CAPABILITIES

• Marine Mammal Observer or wildlife monitoring experience.
• Knowledge of bioacoustics and experience with hydrophone operation is an asset, but training will be provided.
• Familiarity with whale and pinniped species identification.
• Comfortable working on boats and in outdoor settings (long hours, year-round).
• Strong interpersonal skills for client and contractor communications, and collaboration with a large team of observers.
• Strong data collection and handling skills.
• Experience working on highly dynamic construction sites is an asset.
• Field work experience in aquatic biology (e.g., fish and amphibian surveys/salvages and habitat assessment), terrestrial wildlife and birds (e.g., breeding bird nest surveys, raptor surveys, wildlife and species at risk surveys) and vegetation assessment is an asset.

PREFERENCES GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH

• Priority placement will be given to (1) Squamish Nation members and (2) Indigenous candidates with demonstrated experience, competency, and a good safety track record.
• Priority placement will be given to residents of Squamish, Whistler and the Vancouver North Shore.

COMPENSATION

$26/hour - $34.00/hour based on experience and training

30% increase on hourly rate for all night shift work
