Serco is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Controls and Automation Engineer to join our dynamic Serco Canada Marine (SCM) Team for the design of ships and ship systems. In this role you will be reporting to SCM and supporting various projects in Canada. The SCM leverages its corporate knowledge to conceive, design, construct, support and evaluate high-performance maritime systems for a variety of customers. As a Controls Engineer, you will be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team that works closely with the customer, shipyard, and other Serco teams in an integrated design environment to deliver high quality designs to schedule. In a collaborative work environment, you will be providing technical support coordinating design components with a multi-disciplinary team, stakeholders, and customers to generate integrated reports, drawings, and analyses.
Responsibilities
- Support the customer remotely as per the project requirements.
- Occasionally require working in per person at the customer’s premises.
- Design, develop, review, and evaluate the design for automation and control systems on conventional, diesel electric, and battery-operated vessels.
- Develop specifications and block diagrams for Integrated Automation systems pertaining to hybrid propulsion systems.
- Develop specifications for Machinery automation, Power generation and Power management system and onboard energy management system.
- Develop specifications and diagrams for battery management system.
- Develop specification and evaluate vendor proposal for ship safety management systems such as smoke, flooding, and fire.
- Develop specifications and evaluate vendor proposals for control of various ship service systems onboard such as HVAC, firefighting, Emission Monitoring system etc.
- Identify I/Os from the P&IDs and develop the functional specs for the control systems.
- Develop the functional specifications for the PMS and controls systems and related software/ interfaces.
- Travel occasionally for ship checks, shipyard Design Reviews, and factory acceptance.
- Provide support to marine electrical designer team members.
- Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility.
Additional Desired Experience
- Ability to develop various electrical diagrams including power, lighting, communications and electrical system and equipment specifications for ship new construction, modification, and/or repair.
- Ability to undertake electric plant load analysis, fault current calculations, circuit breaker coordination studies, transient stability analysis.
- Design various auxiliary electrical systems and select related equipment on marine vessels.
- Provide electrical engineering project support as needed with clients, equipment vendors, and shipyards.
- Professional Engineer designation in the province in which residing in Canada and certificate of Canadian degree equivalency.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical, electronics, computer, software or control systems engineering.
- 10+ years of experience in the hands‑on design of marine electrical/ control systems with a professional engineering firm, shipyard, or marine electrical firm developing products related to the electronic or control systems.
- Experience in working ship system design principles and practices.
- Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules.
- Broad knowledge of the application of electrical engineering design principles.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards such as 46 CFR; ABS; SOLAS; IEEE Std. 45; IMO; IEC; NEC; and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Ability to review and develop project work, quantities, costs, accuracy of specifications, completeness, and constructability.
- Sound skillset using the Microsoft Office Suite (to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), AutoCAD, and SKM PowerTools (or similar).
- Ability to write clear and concise technical reports.
- Sound oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to work efficiently with limited or no supervision and lead an electrical team/ tasks.
