Job description

Lyft's Hardware Manufacturing & Quality team seeks a Manufacturing Test Engineer to design, build, and manage test systems ensuring bikes and scooters are safe, durable, and functional on production lines. You will own software, electrical, and hardware test fixtures, support factory floor operations, and partner with manufacturing partners and internal teams to resolve issues and drive continuous improvement.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and own software, electrical, and hardware test fixtures for production; define vision, strategy, and architecture for current and future manufacturing test systems
  • Write scripts and programs in Python to run automated tests and capture factory data for traceability and yield analysis; own the in-house OpenHTF-based test platform with YAML-driven config and feature flags
  • Maintain the TypeScript/Electron/React operator application communicating with the Python test agent over gRPC/protobuf; manage CI, signed installers, semver releases, and S3-based auto-update pipeline with rollback
  • Own firmware bring-up, validation, and testing of electronic PCBAs and multi-component electrical systems including motor controllers, battery management systems, and vehicle-controller units
  • Troubleshoot assembly failures on the production line, diagnose and fix bugs in test stations, travel on-site to contract manufacturers, and partner cross-functionally to resolve manufacturing issues and drive corrective actions

What You Need

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
  • Experience with Python, C/C++, OpenHTF, TypeScript, or other scripting languages for test automation
  • Working knowledge of hardware test equipment (DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, custom test fixtures) and lab tools such as soldering and data acquisition
  • Hands-on experience designing and physically building functional test stations: instrument selection, DUT interfacing, harnessing, PLC control, power sequencing, enclosure work, and BOM specification
  • Experience with embedded systems design and communication protocols (CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, UART); ARM-based microcontrollers and RTOS frameworks, preferably STM32 family; firmware programming and recovery (ST-LINK/STM32, AVR/ISP, bootloaders)
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort working directly on the factory floor

Nice to Have

  • Experience with hardware test frameworks (OpenHTF, TypeScript, React, Electron, gRPC, protobuf, SQLite) or building test platforms from scratch
  • Exposure to MES/ERP integration (traveler, BOM, label generation with ZPL/Zebra), cloud data plumbing (S3, Lambda/SQS), and dashboarding (Grafana, Mode)
  • Familiarity with contract manufacturer relationships and global production ramps; test data pipelines, traceability, or genealogy systems
  • Experience with firmware debug tools, serial consoles, JTAG/SWD adapters, bootloaders, and embedded Linux environments including building, deploying, and debugging
  • Willingness to travel to and work on-site at manufacturing and assembly vendors

Base pay range CAD $112,000–CAD $140,000, not inclusive of potential equity offering or bonus. Benefits include extended health and dental coverage, life insurance, disability benefits, mental health benefits, family building benefits, pet benefits, Lyft-funded Health Care Savings Account, RRSP plan with company match, flexible paid time off (salaried) or 15 days PTO plus additional day per year of service (hourly), 18 weeks paid parental leave, and subsidized commuter benefits with Lyft ride credits.
