About the Climate Action Network Canada (CANRac)

Climate Action Network Rseau action climat (CANRac) Canada builds social consensus for bold climate action by nurturing a diverse network of passionate organizations. It is Canada's primary network of organizations working on climate change and energy issues, comprising over 180 organizations from coast to coast. Our members include environmental NGOs, local volunteer-run groups, trade unions, First Nations, social justice, international development, health, youth, faith groups, and grassroots initiatives. For over 35 years, CANRac has been the only national organization advocating for the entire Canadian climate movement.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to lead and support a passionate, dynamic, and values-driven team actively combating climate justice. As the Managing Director, you will oversee daily operations, ensure alignment with organizational values, and support management and staff. You will oversee organizational planning, financial and HR systems, and foster an inclusive workplace. You will work closely with the Executive Director and managers to advance CANRac's mission, supporting a team of 20 staff, including 6 direct reports. You will be part of the leadership team reporting to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Act as a strategic partner to the Executive Director, providing leadership on operational planning, organizational development, and strategic plan implementation.
  • Support a culture of cross-team collaboration and ensure resource alignment across programs and campaigns.
  • Attend and present at Board meetings as required.
People Operations (HR) Leadership and Management – 35%
  • Manage HR policies, procedures, and plans to foster a positive, accessible, and welcoming work environment.
  • Ensure organizational structure supports strategic goals.
  • Oversee employee lifecycle, including recruitment, retention, compensation, benefits, training, recognition, and evaluation.
  • Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to management, ensuring equity, justice, and wellbeing are prioritized.
Operations and Administration – 25%
  • Develop and refine policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks.
  • Manage administrative and IT functions supporting a hybrid/remote workplace.
  • Oversee facilities and assets management.
  • Ensure health & safety compliance and act as Privacy Officer.
Financial & Grant Management – 20%
  • Lead annual budgeting with the finance manager and other leaders.
  • Support fundraising and manage grant writing and reporting processes.
  • Ensure financial operations support organizational effectiveness and compliance.
Job Requirements
  • Experience as an operations manager or managing director, especially in nonprofit or similar sectors.
  • Experience overseeing HR functions for a team of 10+ staff.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Proven success managing budgets, operations, and teams in mission-driven environments.
  • Strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English; bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
  • Commitment to building inclusive, equitable, and collaborative workplaces.
Assets
  • Bilingual (French and English) or willingness to learn French.
  • Passion for climate change, environmental, and social justice.
  • Experience with coalitions or network organizations.
  • Good sense of humor.

Salary Range

$95,325 – $101,221, with adjustments based on experience. CANRac observes a four-day work week, with offices closed on Fridays.
