The Opportunity

Position Summary:

The Manager, Workplace Safety plays a critical leadership role in the operational execution and continuous improvement of occupational health and safety (OHS) programs across the organization.

Reporting to the Program Director, Workplace Safety and Occupational Health, this position ensures compliance with regulatory standards, drives proactive risk mitigation strategies, and supports the development of a strong internal safety culture.

With a focus on frontline engagement, program implementation, and cross-functional collaboration, the Manager enables safe, healthy, and respectful work environments aligned with organizational values and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership & Program Delivery

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute workplace safety programs, hazard prevention strategies, and inspection schedules across multiple sites
  • Ensure operational compliance with applicable legislation (e.g., Alberta OHS Act, Regulation & Code) audits and internal policies
  • Lead the implementation and monitoring of corrective action plans following audits, inspections, or incident reviews
  • Maintain the functionality and compliance of Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs), ensuring minutes, membership, and mandates meet regulatory requirements


Safety Education, Training & Capacity Building

  • Deliver and evaluate safety training programs such as WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, N95 fit testing, and violence prevention
  • Develop site- and role-specific training materials to address unique hazards and risk profiles
  • Act as a subject matter expert to managers and frontline staff, providing coaching and mentorship to improve health and safety competencies
  • Monitor and validate completion of mandatory safety education in alignment with onboarding and refresher training timelines


Incident Response & Risk Management

  • Support investigations of workplace incidents, near misses, and occupational injuries, ensuring accurate documentation and timely escalation
  • Participate in root cause analysis processes and support development of meaningful corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs)
  • Contribute to risk assessments for high-hazard tasks or new work processes (e.g., chemical exposures, patient handling)
  • Maintain documentation for regulatory reporting and ensure readiness for internal or external audits


Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

  • Serve as a key liaison between frontline teams, leadership, Human Resources, and Workplace Health in addressing safety concerns and promoting psychological and physical well-being
  • Establish the annual psychological priorities in alignment with organizational goals and lead the planning, coordination, and execution of initiatives to achieve these priorities
  • Support the coordination of return-to-work programs, providing input on modified duties and accommodation planning
  • Promote a culture of accountability and shared responsibility for safety through proactive communication, visibility at worksites, and engagement with staff, physicians, and volunteers


Data Analysis, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain records and dashboards related to workplace incidents, inspections, training completion, and leading safety indicators
  • Analyze trends and generate reports for senior leadership to inform decision-making and strategic planning
  • Collaborate on the development of key performance indicators (KPIs) and contribute to safety-related quality improvement initiatives


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or related discipline
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or in active pursuit
  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, ideally within healthcare, public sector, or unionized environments
  • Strong working knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation, including hazard assessments, incident management, and training standards
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating adult education and delivering safety training programs
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments and lead change in a complex, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficient with safety management systems and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with incident tracking software an asset
