Manager, Tax - TD Asset Management

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Schedule: 37.5 hours per week

Job Description:

TD Asset Management (TDAM), a member of TD Bank Financial Group, is a leading North American investment manager offering progressive investment solutions to both institutional and individual investors. The Investment Funds Tax team is responsible for all tax matters including tax compliance, research, advocacy, and issue resolution.

The Tax Manager is responsible for tax compliance for more than 260 funds including mutual funds, pooled funds, segregated funds, limited partnerships, exchange-traded funds, and a mutual fund corporation administered by a third-party administrator. This hands-on position primarily focuses on investment funds in Canada and reports to the Head of Tax - Investment Fund.

Key Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Oversee funds' mock and year-end distribution review process, acting as a key contact person with fund administrators, external tax advisors, and internal partners.
  • Review and file T3 tax returns and related tax forms for TD funds prepared by external tax advisors.
  • Knowledge of the investment fund industry and familiarity with various asset classes.
  • Review HST returns and PFIC factors.
  • Primary contact for foreign tax agents and ensure tax compliance in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Track and maintain proper audit trails of tax issues and matters.
  • Review corporate actions for proper treatment and provide advice.
  • Work closely with external auditors on year-end and interim audits from a tax perspective.
  • Assist in reviewing tax-related disclosures in fund documents.
  • Respond to tax inquiries from internal business partners.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining proper policies and procedures to manage tax risks.
  • Work with vendor manager on engagement letters, fee approvals, and vendor performance.
  • Keep abreast of and provide timely notification of upcoming tax legislative changes.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.

Position Qualification Requirements:

  • University degree in accounting, taxation, or related discipline; CICA in-depth tax courses I and II is an asset.
  • 3-5 years of investment funds related tax experience.
  • Demonstrated tax experience with various investment entities.
  • Experience handling tax audits and resolving tax issues.
  • Strong technical research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills.
  • Self-motivated with initiative to improve tax processes.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and tax databases.

Hybrid Work: Employees will be going to 4 days in the office starting March 2025.
