Overview

Job Overview

Under the direction and supervision of the Director Taxation, the Manager, Tax Reporting & Compliance is responsible for providing comprehensive internal tax services, preparing and/or reviewing Canadian corporate income tax returns and ensuring overall tax reporting and compliance requirements are met for Wawanesa and its broker subsidiaries.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors current developments in IFRS, technical journals, and tax legislation and recommends revisions to existing practices in order to ensure tax compliance reflects industry best practices.
  • Prepares tax due diligence with respect to mergers and acquisitions and divestitures as needed. Carries out necessary compliance with respect to Merger and Acquisition transactions. Maintains amicable relationships with vendor and vendor's counsel and accountant(s).
  • Provides value-added analysis in managing quarterly consolidated tax provision, uncertain tax positions and all manner of external reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with financial reporting team to ensure all tax financial reporting requirements are met and internal inquiries, issues and concerns are addressed.
  • Prepares and/or reviews the quarterly and annual tax provisions. Assists with managing the overall tax position for Canadian insurance operations and the broker subsidiaries.
  • Prepares and/or reviews corporate income tax and information tax returns.
  • Assists with coordinating and managing corporate income tax audits. Maintains amicable relationships with external auditors.
  • Assists with tax planning, research and analysis of strategic initiatives, changes in legislation and industry trends as directed by the Director Taxation.
  • Performs tax research, other ad-hoc tax related strategies and other duties as directed or assigned by the Director, Taxation.
  • Champions leadership and people development by promoting a positive working environment for staff.
  • Lead training, automation and cross functional initiatives.
  • Coach and mentor tax team, students or finance team as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree with a major in Accounting or other related post-secondary degree.
  • CPA accounting designation and completion of the CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course or Masters in Tax preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years in industry or public practice with at least 8 years of direct tax experience and 5 years in a Manager role.
  • Previous experience in dealing with taxation auditors (CRA & provincial tax authorities) considered an asset.
  • Strong teamwork skills. Treats others with respect and courtesy and shares thoughts and ideas with the rest of the team. Works to ensure group objectives are met by making quality contributions and supporting fellow team members.
  • Positive and confident individual who communicates in a persuasive and eloquent manner (both written and oral).
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills by keeping track of the status of various tasks and project activities.
  • Excellent attention to detail. Examines all information completely to identify everything that is relevant and all potential impacts.
  • Strong negotiation skills by presenting information or arguments in a convincing manner and by focusing on what is important.
  • Previous experience in working for financial institutions (or servicing financial institutions) is preferred.
  • Completion of other CPA Canada In-depth specialty tax courses are desired.
