Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Taxation, the Manager, Tax Reporting & Compliance is responsible for providing comprehensive internal tax services, preparing and/or reviewing Canadian corporate income tax returns, and ensuring overall tax reporting and compliance requirements are met for Wawanesa and its broker subsidiaries.
Job Responsibilities
- Monitors current developments in IFRS, technical journals, and tax legislation, recommending revisions to existing practices to ensure tax compliance reflects industry best practices.
- Prepares tax due diligence related to mergers and acquisitions and divestitures as needed. Ensures compliance with M&A transactions and maintains good relationships with vendors, their counsel, and accountants.
- Provides value-added analysis in managing quarterly consolidated tax provisions, uncertain tax positions, and external reporting requirements.
- Collaborates with the financial reporting team to ensure tax financial reporting requirements are met and internal inquiries are addressed.
- Prepares and/or reviews quarterly and annual tax provisions. Manages the overall tax position for Canadian insurance operations and broker subsidiaries.
- Prepares and/or reviews corporate income tax and information tax returns.
- Assists with coordinating and managing corporate income tax audits and maintains good relationships with external auditors.
- Supports tax planning, research, and analysis of strategic initiatives, legislative changes, and industry trends as directed by the Director of Taxation.
- Performs tax research and other ad-hoc tax-related strategies as assigned by the Director of Taxation.
- Promotes leadership and people development by fostering a positive work environment.
- Leads training, automation, and cross-functional initiatives.
- Coaches and mentors tax team members, students, or finance team members as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree with a major in Accounting or a related post-secondary degree.
- CPA accounting designation and completion of the CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course or a Master's in Tax are preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of industry or public practice experience, with at least 8 years in direct tax and 5 years in a managerial role.
- Experience dealing with taxation auditors (CRA and provincial authorities) is an asset.
- Strong teamwork skills, respectful and courteous, with a focus on group objectives.
- Confident communicator, both written and oral.
- Excellent planning, organizing, and attention to detail skills.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Experience working with financial institutions is preferred.
- Additional CPA Canada In-depth specialty tax courses are desirable.
