Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Students, the Manager, Student Support & Care Coordination provides strategic leadership and direct care coordination for complex student cases, including crisis response, case management, and advocacy.

The role leads the Behaviour Intervention Team, guiding staff in addressing complex student concerns, and shaping policies and frameworks for case coordination. Collaboration with Student Affairs and campus leadership is essential to develop an integrated approach to student care.

This position ensures staff are equipped to support students facing challenges such as health issues, safety risks, behavioral concerns, or other factors affecting their academic and personal well-being.

The Manager has a university-wide mandate, based at the Peterborough campus, with regular collaboration with the Durham campus. They will ensure equitable delivery of policies, programs, and services across campuses.

Key Activities:

  • Lead the Behaviour Intervention Team (BIT) and develop policies supporting the team.
  • Participate in or lead responses to major student issues, coordinating with university partners.
  • Manage responses to high-impact student issues, including information collection, liaising with families, and follow-up.
  • Provide non-clinical guidance on complex and high-risk issues.
  • Offer advice and referrals to support services for students.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and guardians regarding complex issues while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Meet with students regularly to manage caseloads and coordinate care.
  • Use trauma-informed and culturally appropriate practices.

Education & Training:

  • Identify training needs and develop education initiatives for supporting high-risk students and team members.
  • Build relationships across university units and external partners to enhance care initiatives.
  • Create educational programs to promote awareness of the Behaviour Intervention Team.
  • Proactively support students and the community to prevent escalation of complex cases.

Leadership & Administration:

  • Ensure policies related to behaviour intervention, supported leave, and crisis response comply with legislation and best practices.
  • Manage confidentiality and records in compliance with privacy laws.
  • Participate in university committees, advocating for student support and providing strategic input.
  • Lead the development and improvement of processes related to student behaviour and case management.
  • Support legislative and annual reporting requirements.

Education Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Educational Psychology, Counselling, Psychology, Conflict Management, or related fields.
  • Certification in NaBITA non-clinical case management or behavioural intervention training.

Experience / Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of managing sensitive crisis situations with university-aged populations.
  • Affiliations with HECMA or CACUSS are assets.
  • Expertise in trauma-informed practices.
  • Experience developing policies, procedures, and crisis protocols.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and trends in higher education and case management.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenization.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with leadership and stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathy and ability to handle traumatic issues confidentially.

  • Proficiency in computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, content management).
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
  • A recent Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
