Job Summary

The Manager, Student Life and Housing is directly accountable to the Director of Student Services ( DSS ) for managing staff, budget and daily operations. The position will ensure the development and delivery of student life programs and services within health & wellness, health center, student recreation and the student life activities within CNC housing services in timely, consistent and with high service levels to potential students, and will ensure holistic student support services are developed and provided for all students. In addition, the Manager will assist with or initiate departmental service reviews and manage projects dealing with all aspects of the responsibility including, but not limited to, staff development, policy development, health & wellness, student life and housing services.

Nature & Scope

The role requires administrative and professional work and conduct. It involves developing, planning, organizing, coordinating, managing, and carrying out the services and procedures of Student Life & Housing, in collaboration with the Director of Student Services. This role oversees and supports leadership of full and part-time staff for the day-to-day operations of Health & Wellness, Recreation Services, Wellness Coaches and the Housing staff. The Manager also supervises casual and seasonal support staff, student community assistants, and the Elder/Cultural Advisor in Nahoonai-a (Discover House) to ensure student life supports and services are a part of the day-to-day operations.

The incumbent must be accessible to students, faculty, and administrators. The incumbent requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of the structures, agencies and processes of the public and post-secondary education system in British Columbia. Effective performance will require skill in human relations and a high degree of mutual trust and credibility in order to work with people individually and collectively.

  • Provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction when planning, developing, implementing and evaluating cohesive, integrated programs and services within the Student Life and Housing portfolio.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.

Specific Duties

  • Oversees the staffing requirements of the Student Life & Housing department. Leads, plans, organizes and directs staff.
  • Prepares, submits and administers annual Department Plans and budgets in consultation with the Director of Student Services.
  • Is a member of College committees such as: Strategic Enrolment Management; and Student Affairs Leadership Team.
  • Conducts and participates in policy and process reviews and analyses, and provides recommendations and proposals to the Director of Student Services.
  • Develops long-term department service plans to provide continuous improvements to Student Affairs.
  • Understands and administers provisions of the Collective Agreements, participates in making recommendations for changes to Collective Agreements and participates in bargaining as needed.

Student Life

  • Creates and manages with staff a suite of health & wellness programs, recreation and housing programs and services based on collected student data so programs are aligned to student needs and expectations.
  • Works in collaboration with other Student Affairs managers in the development of holistic student engagement activities and events with a focus on health & wellness (physical, social, emotional, academic, and spiritual).
  • Coordinates and leads with staff a holistic wellness strategy.
  • Develops a robust assessment and outcomes approach to programs and services to ensure quality control and effective measures.
  • Works in collaboration with the College of New Caledonia Student Union in developing joint student events and activities. Enhance the partnership with Student Union clubs and recreation activities.
  • Supports staff in the facilitation of a student/employee recreation services program.
  • Completes research to acquire knowledge of current trends and employs that knowledge with staff in the creation of student life and student housing strategies.
  • Employs new services and programs, embedded with student development principles and practice with other student support services within the college.
  • Engages in and assists with institutional student programs such as Open House, orientation programs and so on.

Student Housing

  • Develops and updates policy and procedure manuals
  • Leads the housing managers-on-call rotation, processes and training, participating in the rotation as needed to ensure ongoing coverage outside regular business hours.
  • Liaises with and leads the Elder/Cultural Advisor in Nahoonai-a (Discover House) to ensure student life supports and services are a part of the day-to-day operations.
  • Engage in cultural learning and development opportunities to engage with all students.
  • Ensures community standards and guidelines are fair, equitable and adhered to by students in all campus housing.
  • Liaises with facility management, and security services in providing a safe, comfortable living environment.
  • Works collaboratively with finance, facility and security services on annual planning as well as problem solving and change management from situational changes throughout the year.
  • Leads and manages a seamless application and registration process using technological supports and effective communication channels.
  • Works collaboratively with Finance staff to administer appropriate invoicing and processing of payments.
  • Engages in provincial post-secondary housing developments, housing associations and other provincial supports in addition to local tenant requirements.
  • Collects data on best practices in student housing service deliveries and use data to plan programs and services with and for students.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum four-year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Preference for education in social services, psychology, business management, equivalencies will be considered.
  • 5 years experience in Student Services (Student Life and Housing in particular and/or related post secondary) of which includes at least 3 years leading and supervising a team.
  • Experience directly to professional student affairs experience, including knowledge of student development theory is preferred.
  • A high degree of proficiency in computer skills and relevant post-secondary software utilization.
  • Experience using and working with a post-secondary Student Information System (Colleague preferred).
  • Extensive knowledge and proven demonstrated best practices experience in the activities of student engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, execute and complete projects through a project management approach. Leads projects from planning to implementation. This may include, but is not limited to, budgeting, resource allocation, documentation, training and managing consultants.
  • Plays a leading or coordinating role in the acquisition, development and implementation of new software and expanded web-based services. Must be knowledgeable of and remain current with developments in student information technology.
