Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 4–7 years of progressive software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years leading or mentoring software engineering teams.
  • Hands-on with React/Next.js frontend, Flutter mobile, and Python/.NET backend.
  • Experience delivering in Agile environments.

Join the Information Technology team at Flair as a Manager, Software Engineering, where innovation, collaboration, and technology come together to build solutions that support both our customers and our business. Reporting to the Director, Software Engineering, the Manager, Software Engineering is responsible for leading a cross‑functional team focused on the design, development, and delivery of scalable, high‑quality applications across web, mobile, and backend platforms. This role is accountable for driving execution, ensuring engineering teams consistently deliver reliable, secure, and high‑performing solutions that align with product priorities and business objectives. Leading teams working across Next.js (React‑based web applications), Flutter mobile applications, and Python and .NET backend services, the Manager, Software Engineering provides technical leadership, fosters collaboration, and supports the successful delivery of business‑critical systems. The ideal candidate combines strong people leadership with a solid technical foundation and a passion for building high‑performing teams, improving engineering practices, and delivering exceptional software solutions.

This role is located on‑site at any of our offices in Calgary, AB (YYC), Edmonton, AB (YEG), or Toronto, ON (YYZ),

A Day In The Life
  • Lead and manage a cross‑functional team of software engineers across frontend, backend, and mobile application development, fostering collaboration, accountability, and high performance.
  • Own the end‑to‑end delivery of software features and systems, ensuring solutions are delivered on time, meet quality standards, and align with business and technical requirements.
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for engineering execution by overseeing delivery plans, monitoring progress, and ensuring successful project outcomes.
  • Lead sprint planning, backlog refinement, delivery tracking, and resource planning to ensure engineering work is well‑organized, accurately estimated, and delivered with minimal rework.
  • Identify, communicate, and remove technical and operational blockers that may impact delivery timelines, while proactively managing risks and dependencies.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across frontend applications built with Next.js and React, mobile applications developed in Flutter, and backend services built using Python and .NET APIs.
  • Promote and enforce engineering best practices by ensuring high standards for code quality, testing, security, performance, scalability, and maintainability across all software solutions.
  • Partner closely with architecture leadership to ensure engineering implementation aligns with approved technical designs, architectural standards, and long‑term technology strategy.
  • Collaborate with Technical Product Managers and Product Managers to ensure requirements are clearly defined, technically feasible, and prioritized appropriately before development begins.
  • Provide early feedback on proposed solutions and requirements by identifying gaps, risks, technical constraints, or opportunities for improvement before work enters development.
  • Ensure appropriate testing strategies are implemented throughout the software development lifecycle, including unit testing, integration testing, and end‑to‑end validation, to maintain high product quality.
  • Support production stability by overseeing incident resolution, root cause analysis, and continuous improvements that enhance system reliability, availability, and performance.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by optimizing development workflows, improving engineering efficiency, and encouraging the adoption of modern software engineering practices.
  • Champion the adoption of CI/CD pipelines, automation, DevOps practices, and engineering tools that improve deployment speed, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Monitor, analyze, and improve key engineering delivery metrics, including cycle time, deployment frequency, lead time, defect rates, and overall team performance, using data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, continuous learning, and accountability by mentoring engineers, supporting professional development, and encouraging knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of four (4) to seven (7) years of progressive software engineering experience.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience leading, mentoring, or coaching software engineering teams.
    • Hands‑on experience developing and supporting applications using modern frontend frameworks such as React and Next.js.
    • Experience designing and developing backend services and APIs using Python and/or .NET technologies.
    • Experience working with mobile application development concepts, preferably using Flutter or similar frameworks.
    • Experience delivering software solutions within Agile development environments.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong technical understanding of modern web, mobile, and backend application architectures.
    • Proven ability to lead and develop high‑performing engineering teams while fostering collaboration and accountability.
    • Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and decision‑making skills.
    • Ability to balance technical priorities, delivery timelines, and business objectives in a fast‑paced environment.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non‑technical teams.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a focus on quality, performance, and continuous improvement.
  • Requirements:
    • Clear criminal record check and satisfactory references.
    • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada without restriction.
