At KPMG, you’ll join a team of diverse and dedicated problem solvers, connected by a common cause of turning insight into opportunity for clients and communities around the world.

The Independence Group ensures the firm and its personnel comply with Professional, Regulatory, and KPMG Global (and local country) independence standards. This role focuses on liaising with Partners and Staff across all service lines regarding standards and policies related to independence, including those established by the SEC, PCAOB, CPA Code of Professional Conduct, and IESBA Code.

What You Will Do
  • Apply technical knowledge and expertise in Canadian, SEC, PCAOB, and IESBA auditor independence rules, along with KPMG policies, to support client engagement teams.
  • Assist in managing the review and approval workflow for assessing service permissibility for audit clients.
  • Use research, critical thinking, and analytical skills to evaluate the firm’s independence and relationships with respect to audit clients.
  • Provide consultations to KPMG partners and teams across Canada on auditor independence issues.
  • Guide client engagement teams in completing independence clearance procedures.
  • Develop and update independence policies, processes, and tools to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Promote commitment to audit quality, risk management, and independence policies within the firm.
  • Prepare technical alerts, guidance, training materials, and other deliverables for distribution.
  • Supervise team members on independence requests and tasks.
  • Manage projects and identify process improvements.

Employees may need to work beyond normal hours to meet business needs and also have flexibility for personal matters.

What You Bring To The Role
  • Minimum of five years of client service experience in independence, audit, or risk management roles.
  • A professional accounting (CPA) or risk qualification.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, diligent, with prompt and professional response skills.
  • Strong research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Initiative and strong organizational skills.
  • Experience responding to complex inquiries, analyzing data, and documenting findings.
  • Excellent time management, ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Excellent business writing and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and handle challenging situations confidently.
  • Leadership and relationship management skills, focusing on coaching and trust-building.
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately.
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral.

This role supports Risk Management for KPMG in Canada, requiring collaboration with English-speaking colleagues and documentation of findings.
