Reporting to the Regional Director of Environment for the North America region, the Manager, Regulatory and Strategic Planning is responsible for developing and advancing our regulatory plans and activities to meet compliance requirements (federal, provincial, state) and commitments, and minimize environmental risks across our assets and projects.

This position requires interpersonal and communication skills to present material and use sound regulatory and technical justification to influence outcomes. The incumbent must prioritize contending demands in a fast paced environment and possess strong problem-solving abilities, with a passion for continuous improvement.

The outstanding candidate will lead on regulatory compliance, environmental risk identification and management, and critical oversight on regulatory and permitting opportunities and challenges. This role is critical for advancing our environmental performance and sustainable mining practices.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Cultivate a team culture of inclusivity and collaboration through mentorship, empowerment, and engagement
  • Lead a team to achieve compliance, permitting, and long-term goals
  • Build effective relationships across the North American portfolio, enterprise teams, government representatives, regulators, Indigenous communities, communities of interest, and environmental organizations
  • Advise on management decisions and environmental regulatory approvals through robust technical expertise and knowledge of applicable commitments, permits, and other requirements
  • Identify risks, issues, and opportunities including the strategic direction, compliance, reputational impacts and regulatory approvals associated with operations, projects, and legacy properties
  • Provide technical, regulatory, and strategic oversight into environmental-related fields
  • Advance permits in Canada, US, and BC while working in successful partnership with Indigenous communities and government organizations
  • Develop and support strategies for North American environmental management assessment \
  • Lead and support negotiations with government, regulatory agencies, Indigenous government organizations, and lease holders on conditions, commitments, agreements, and mitigation actions
  • Ensure annual budgeting and scheduling meet business commitments
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, encouraging their professional development and ensuring the team is functioning effectively to deliver environmental objectives
  • Support training and capacity building with Operations as required to effectively apply guidelines, procedures, and standards
  • Supervise environmental issues that have the potential to impact Teck’s reputation and sustainability
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental-related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio.) preferred
  • 10+ years of experience providing leadership in environmental compliance and risk management in mining or other natural resource industry
  • Well-versed in provincial/state/federal legislation and North American mining activities regulations
  • Technical understanding of environmental fields, compliance practices, risk evaluation and mitigation with a focus on improvement of our environmental performance
  • Demonstrated ability to form relationships with people at all levels of the organization and government officials, Indigenous groups, and other communities to advise outcomes and conflicts
  • Strong leadership and management skills, excellent project management experience, and technical expertise in compliance and permitting
  • Sophisticated written, verbal and interpersonal communications and presentation skills in formal/informal settings
  • A curious problem solver who asks thoughtful questions, takes personal risks to raise points of creative tension, and identifies and solves problems with logical solutions in a timely manner
  • Motivated self-starter who can manage projects simultaneously and adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to travel approximately 30% on average annually

Salary Range: $147,000 - $182,000

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
