Job summary

Scotiabank in Toronto is seeking a quantitative analyst to work on enterprise stress testing projects, developing models for balance sheet and income statement across major products. The role requires strong quantitative skills, programming capability, and willingness to learn financial concepts.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, or Engineering; quantitative discipline preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in statistical model development, validation, or data analytics; Python and data libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Plotly); Git experience.
  • Strong adaptability and ability to learn financial concepts quickly.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders across diverse areas.
  • Experience with stress testing or risk modelling is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop statistical models to project PPNR using macroeconomic time series and scenario data.
  • Execute stress testing exercises and apply models across business lines; support outputs for scenarios.
  • Analyze model outputs, explain drivers, document assumptions and modelling processes for internal/regulatory use.
  • Identify automation opportunities; improve production workflows and create visualization tools.

The successful candidate will work on enterprise stress testing projects and support the development, implementation, analysis, and reporting of models for the Bank’s balance sheet and income statement across major products and business lines. The role requires strong quantitative skills, programming capability, clear communication, and an interest in learning financial concepts from business lines.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:
  • Model Development: Work on statistical models to project PPNR (Pre-Provision Net Revenue) as a function of macroeconomic time series variables, using historical data, internal expertise, and scenario assumptions.
  • Stress Test Implementation: Execute stress testing exercises, apply models across business lines, and support the production of scenario-based outputs.
  • Result Analysis and Reporting: Analyze model outputs, explain key drivers, document assumptions and modelling processes, and prepare materials for internal stakeholders and external regulators.
  • Process Automation: Identify automation opportunities, improve production workflows, optimize code, and develop visualization tools to support model development and results review.
  • Emerging Risk Analysis: Support supplementary analysis and methodology development for emerging risk themes such as climate change, geopolitical risk, consumer indebtedness, and housing market pressures.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with business lines, model validation, internal audit, other model development teams, and other stakeholders to explain results, support model alignment, and respond to inquiries.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed? We’d love to work with you if you have:
  • Degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or another related quantitative discipline; knowledge of statistical or econometric modelling and accounting is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in statistical model development, model validation, or data analytics; proficiency in Python, including common data science and visualization libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Plotly; experience with version control tools such as Git.
  • Strong adaptability, ability to learn new concepts quickly, and interest in building financial knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with stakeholders across diverse areas.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment, professionalism, time management, and teamwork skills.
