PURPOSE OF THE POSITION :

As Manager Payroll, the successful candidate will lead payroll processing for Canadian and U.S. Union / Non-Union employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficient operations. The position involves combining technical skills, leadership, and working closely with internal collaborators and teams to facilitate smooth payroll processes, improve operations, and foster employee growth.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES :

  • Serve as the payroll guide on processes, tax filings, legislative changes, compliance audits, and external regulatory requirements
  • Lead and participate in internal and external audits (e.g., Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) while ensuring regulatory compliance and addressing audit findings
  • Lead year-end processes, including balancing, producing, and filing accurate tax slips for Canadian / U.S. employees and ensuring amendments are accurate
  • Ensure prompt and accurate responses to payroll inquiries from employees, cross-border staff, and the Board of Directors
  • Continuously review and improve departmental processes and controls for efficiency, accuracy, and compliance with business requirements
  • Train, guide, and motivate payroll team while encouraging collaboration across departments to ensure effective resource and workload management
  • Engage with key internal customers (e.g., Human Resources (HRIS), Human Resources (HR), Legal, Tax, Accounting) to ensure efficient payroll operations and flawless integration with other systems
  • Act as the payroll lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for payroll-related projects, including SAP system initiatives and process automation
  • Conduct audits, supervise compliance with SOX and payroll controls, and establish metrics to track payroll accuracy, remittance, and rework
  • Stay current with changes in labour / payroll laws, tax codes, and benefits, ensuring payroll practices remain up-to-date and penalties are avoided

POSITION REQUIREMENTS :

  • University degree / diploma in Business, HR, or Finance or equivalent relevant experience with a preference for Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) (Canada) and / or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) (U.S.) designation
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership, full-cycle payroll processing, and payroll tax filing experience
  • Expertise in handling Board of Director, Expatriate, and Shadow payrolls
  • Proven understanding of Canadian / U.S. payroll regulations and multi-union payroll environments
  • Experience with SAP Human Capital Management (HCM) and sophisticated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel / Word)
  • Proven track record to manage data integrity, year-end reconciliation, and tax remittance
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and team development skills
  • Experience of pension payrolls, employee stock options, and savings plans

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification / qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
